Richard Hackett Obituary

Richard Hackett Sr.

DOVER - Richard (Dick) Clayton Hackett Sr., 84, of 108 6th Street Dover, died at his home on Wednesday February 6, 2013.

Born May 29, 1928, in Farmington, the son of William and Sadie Hackett.

Richard is predeceased by his late wife, Roberta Jean Hackett whom he was married to for 65 years.

Dick is survived by his Children and their spouses, Richard Hackett Jr. and his wife Carol of Somersworth, Sandra Nuckolls and her husband Douglas of Lancaster, Calif., and Betty (Beth) Creighton and her husband Randy of Rochester; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Dick loved life and he always had a smile on his face. He loved to joke with his family and friends. He was a dedicated caretaker of his late wife, Roberta.

Everyone who met him enjoyed knowing him. Dick always made you feel special. He was a man of a caring nature for all.

He worked for the B&M railroad from age 15 to 67. When Dick went to enlist for the military they refused him because they told him he was more needed at the Railroad to help transport equipment and soldiers. He was proud to do just that.

One time when he and Pete Valos (fellow railroad friend) were walking along the rails in front of a pile of logs braced up to use for rail ties-the brace let go on one side. Pete was in front of Dad. Dad held the brace to let Pete get out of the way (Pete would have been crushed). Dad woke up in Mass. General Hospital with a broken back. He was there over a year and he was told he would never walk again. Dad said watch me, and he did. So he mended and came home.

Dad always loved his fishing! He would take all 3 kids down to the Durham Bridge and Dover Point to try our luck. Sometimes good-sometimes not so good, but it was always an adventure. He always loved to paint the inside of the houses we lived in. He was a landlord's dream and they appreciated him. Then dad and mom bought their own home to raise their 3 children.

There are no services at this time but will be a service this summer.

Hello Sandy, Dickie & Betty. Y'all know Sandy and I have been best friends for 30 years, and I had the opportunity of meeting your folks "Dick & Jean" during a NH visit several years ago. I remember your Dad's thoughtful kindness when he brought lottery tickets to Randy & Betty's home where I was recovering from an allergic reaction to an accidental dose of sea food ... with a gentle smile on his face he said "here's a ticket for the sick girl". Of course, to his disappointment, none of us had the winning ticket! So, it's little moments like this that are treasured, precious memories to keep in your thoughts with a smile. And, rest your hearts knowing that lifetime partners "Dick & Jean" will NEVER be separated again. My Heartfelt Thoughts & Love to you all ... Diana

I was privileged to work with Dick and Pete, my uncle, for two summers after I got out of high school. They were hard workers but also were always up for a prank or two with their coworkers.
Sorry for your loss, he did indeed touch a lot of people in a nice way, and won't be forgotten.

My grandfather great to go to Harveys to eat. He was at Dunkin Donuts one day when a lady went around the gate for the train and pulled in to Dunkins. He had to tell her that in takes a mile for the train to stop.. Also going out to eat at Asia downtown Dover..

My Dad and I were always joking on the phone the last few years. He seemed lonely since my mother's passing. My husband got thrown off our horse a few times while training-my Dad always asked if he was still on him(Butch-horses name)He shared with me that he used to ride when he was young. It was a minister's horse. He got thrown a few times himself and dumped in a sewer once--We laughed so much at that story:):) He always was a man who stood by his family through thick and thin. I called him "Skinny" he was a big Railroad man! He would say: I'm only 169 lbs-I would answer "in one leg?" He would roar with laughter-I loved him so:) He called me "Special" probably because I was the oldest.Betty was the "CUTE" youngest, and Dickie was the "in-between one." always on an adventure--Dickie actually went to Woodstock!!! My Best friend Diana-he was the only one she knew that went there!!! My Dad loved all of us in his own Special Way-we love him back:):):)
