Richard Staples Obituary
RYE - Richard "Dick" C. Staples, Sr., 91, of Rye, passed away August 27, 2013 at the Webster At Rye Nursing Home. Born in Portsmouth, on May 22, 1922, he was the son of the late Lester J. and Myra E. (Chandler) Staples and was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1940. Richard enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1943 and served during World War II as a Pilot until 1945. He entered the Army Reserves and was called back to active duty in 1950 during the Korean War. Richard continued his love of flying even after retiring as a Major from the reserves, after 22 years of service. Prior to his retirement he was the superintendent of the electronics shop at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Richard was a member of St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F&AM of Portsmouth and National Sojournes. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn L. (Stewart) Staples; son, Richard C. Staples, Jr. and his wife Denise of Portsmouth, daughter, Cheryl King and her husband Douglas of Palm Harbor, Fla, grandchildren, Jeffrey Staples and his partner April George of Portsmouth, Khristina Hoey and her husband Timothy of Manchester, Amanda Knox and her husband Geoffrey of New Fairfield, Conn, and Kevin King and his wife Denise of New Boston; great-grandchildren, Evan Hoey, Alex and Ethan King; nieces, Kathy Sadler and her husband, Charles, Joanne King, Diana White; and cousin, Harvey Chandler. Richard was predeceased by his sister, Claire Melvin and her husband Jim, his best friend, J.B. Begala, and nephew, Douglas White.
Services: Visiting hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad Street, Portsmouth with a funeral service immediately following at 12 p.m. Masonic services by St. Andrew's Lodge will be held prior to the visiting hours at 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I use to see Evey at my Aunt's house. Many years back, they took me for a plane ride. I still have the certificate & picture. My thoughts are with you in this time.

Another one of the Greatest Generation is gone. My dad, Warren Allen, was neighbors with Dick in Rye NH, & was his best man at their wedding during the war. Evey was in my dad's Portsmouth High class. Fond memories of fun times they all had together. Sending my thoughts & prayers to Evey & the family.
