Austin Brandenburg Obituary

Mr. Austin Toms Brandenburg, well-known local TV repairman and antenna specialist, of Myersville, died Friday, March 30, 2018, at Vindobona Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was 99.

Born Sept. 5, 1918, he was the son of the late Vada C. Toms and Oscar C. Brandenburg. He completed Myersville public school in 1931, and was one of the last two surviving members of the Middletown High School graduating class of 1935, where he was secretary-treasurer. He enjoyed baseball, and in his youth was a member of the Harmony softball and Myersville baseball teams. In later years he enjoyed watching the Orioles win.

He spent his early years working the family farm. In the early 1950s he studied basic electronics and television, and in 1952 started a television repair and antenna installation service that continued for over half a century, often serving as many as three generations of some area families. In 2002 he marked 50 years in business, and he continued "climbing" for quite a few years past that. The occasion generated a lot of attention, with articles in area newspapers, a television spot, special citations, and inclusion in a book on 103 "super seniors" from all over the country.

He enjoyed helping his son rake hay, designing outdoor projects, sharing picnics in the meadow with family and friends, being a regular at the Red Byrd restaurant in Keedysville, and relaxing with his treasured cat Skeebo on his lap.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 58 years, Grace E. Rohrer Brandenburg, who died April 29, 2000. He is survived by a son, Ronald L. Brandenburg and wife Maryann, of Myersville; a daughter, Linda B. Gregory and husband Fred, of Frederick; three grandchildren, Melissa Gregory; Jeff Brandenburg and wife MaryBeth; and Kerry Allegretti and husband John; and seven great-grandchildren, Grace, Maeve, Tess, and Henry Brandenburg; and Daniel, Julia, and Ava Allegretti.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 400 Main St., Myersville, prior to the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Pastor David Howell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Brandenburg's name may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 13, Myersville, MD 21773.

He will be greatly missed! He amazed me how he would move around at his age! What a wonderful person he was and always had a smile. Condolences to your family.

I have treasured childhood memories of those picnics in the pasture in the 1950's and 60's. My dad, Garland Smith, was Austin's cousin, but they were like brothers and best buddies growing up together. Both were fine examples of old fashioned, true gentlemen, devoted to family. Even though my parents moved us far away (Ohio and then Arizona), they kept in touch.
Our love and condolences to Ronnie, Linda and the rest of the family.

Austin grew up with my Dad (cousin Garland), and some of my earliest childhood memories are the family reunions down by the creek along with "chicken every Sunday" in Myersville ... over 65 years ago! We were fortunate and blessed to be able to spend a memorable afternoon with Austin & family in 2014 listening to his memories of growing up with my dad and some of their shenanigans back then.
We will cherish the memories forever and, of course, our condolences to Ronnie and Linda and their families ...

RIP to Mr. Brandenburg. I know he came to our house many times to fix our television and antenna. We lived nearby for many years on Dawn Court in Myersville and we would always see him out and about in his yard when we drove by. A truly nice man who loved helping others

Many fond memories of visits to the farm. This city kid experienced tractor driving (sort of); hay baling, potato hauling, snakes and pecking chickens. Oh! And land mines in the meadow. There was also hog slopping and the smell of silage. Always had a great time when I visited. Grace and Brandy also provided the meadow in which I learned to stick shift my 50 Merc.

One fact omitted from Uncle Brandy's obituary was his nightly mixing bowl of ice cream (the way I remember it anyway).

Thanks for everything Uncle Brandy.

Barbara and I send our condolences to Ronnie and Linda and their families.

Uncle Brandy was one of my favorite relatives. So nice and personable all the time.

I recall visiting his farm when I was young, learning about his farming life and also family gatherings in the farm meadow.

Truly an outstanding man. An inspiration to all of us. He will be missed.

Prayers and condolences to Ronnie, Linda and the entire family.
