Betty Richter Obituary
Mrs. Betty M. (Fahrney) Richter, 67, of 123 Colonial Drive, Chambersburg, Pa., died at 4:40 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, in Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg. Her death was unexpected and attributed to natural causes.
Born Jan. 29, 1937, in Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Paul M. and Gail L. (Overcash) Fahrney. She lived her early life in Quincy Township.
Mrs. Richter was a graduate of Quincy High School with the Class of 1955. She later graduated from Chambersburg School of Nursing as an LPN, and with her registered nurse certification from Helene Fuld School of Nursing in New York. She also had attended Washington Bible College in Lanham, for one year.
She and her husband, Mr. Benjamin "Earl" Richter II, were married Aug. 14, 1969, in Toms River, N.J. They had lived at their present residence since August 1999.
Mrs. Richter was employed in her early life at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, in the oncology unit, then Prince George's Hospital Center in Hyattsville, as an R.N., and helped to develop the detox unit in the hospital. She also worked at Quincy United Methodist Home, the former Guilford Convalescent Home in Fayetteville, and Leader Nursing Home, Chambersburg. Prior to retiring in the mid '90s, she worked as a staff development coordinator in teaching universal precautions in all practice of medicines at North Hampton Manor in Frederick.
She was a member of South Mountain Bible Church, where she served on the Missions Committee as vice president and secretary. She was also the prayer coordinator of the church and a member of the Child Evangelism Fellowship of Franklin and Fulton counties. While living in Frederick, she was a member of Fredericktowne Baptist Church in Walkersville, where she served on the Missions Committee.
Mrs. Richter enjoyed sewing, decorating and mostly giving of herself.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by six sisters, A. Lorraine Barnhart, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa., Erma P. Harshman of Greencastle, Pa., Ruby E. Masters of Quincy, M. Evelyn Monn of Waynesboro, Judith A. Eck of Chambersburg, and Joan M. Jones of Waynesboro; two brothers, Robert Fahrney of State Line, Pa., and Donald L. Fahrney of Five Forks, Pa.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Fahrney and Paul O. "Dean" Fahrney.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, in South Mountain Bible Church, 11275 S. Mountain Road, Fayetteville, Pa., with the Rev. David L. Keener officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery near Quincy, Pa.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday evening, in the Grove Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the India Orphanage Project in care of South Mountain Bible Church, 11275 South Mountain Road, Fayetteville, PA 17222.
