Howard Smith Obituary

Howard Jesse Smith, Jr. of New Bern, NC, formerly of Frederick, MD, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard Jesse Smith, Sr. and Anna Weddle Smith.

Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Katherine "Dee" Smith and three much loved children and their families: Howard Jesse Smith III (Rachael) of Hagerstown, MD, Eva O'Steen Bell (Brian), of New Bern, NC and John Wesley Cross, Jr (Kim) of Columbia, SC. Also surviving are many grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family members. Howard will also be remembered by special family member, Wayne Alexander.

Baseball was "Smitty's" first love, playing for Frederick High School, the Ijamsville ball team, and on the Baltimore Orioles farm team. He worked many years in the Insurance Industry and made many lasting friendships. As a charter member of Emmanuel Alliance Church, one of his greatest joys was working with the youth groups. After retiring to New Bern, NC, in 1994, he and Dee fulfilled a dream of being innkeepers and purchased the Aerie Bed and Breakfast and Tea Room. Pursuing an interest in history, working as an historical interpreter at Tryon Palace was a real joy for him. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in New Bern and particularly enjoyed singing in the choir.

A celebration of Howard's life will be held on Saturday, December 16 at 2:00pm at Emmanuel Alliance Church, 7102 Ladd Lane, Frederick, MD. Howard's wishes were that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Emmanuel Alliance Church www.emmanuelalliance.com, or 7102 Ladd Ln. Frederick, MD 21703

Dee, I do remember your journey with Howard from its beginning. I remember when you had that apt on E Church street and meeting Howard there for the first time to play a game of Yazhee. You from that time seemed so happy to be on a journey with him. Your courtesies together extended to Jan and I were wonderful and Howard was such a fun part of any time spent with you both. I hope your heart can shed the unhappiness of this time and focus on the sweet memories that you had together. God Bless you both.

PopPop, thank you for all the love through the years. Your home and heart was a place I knew I could always seek guidance, comfort, love and peace. You taught me so many life lessons through the years and helped mold me and my faith into the person I am today. I can't ever thank you enough for all you have done.

Grandee, I wish I was there. I am forever grateful for being able to be his granddaughter nurse for thanksgiving and see a fraction of what you did so lovingly every day. Your love for each other inspires me. I have big hugs for you in Frederick soon. Love you, miss you. Sending prayers for comfort.
