John Thomas Broaddus, Jr., 92, formerly of Fairfax and Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, passed away on Wed., Nov. 9, 2016. The son of the late John T. Broaddus, Sr. and Margaret C. Broaddus, he was born Oct. 17, 1924 at Sibley Hospital, Washington, D.C. John graduated from Osbourn High School, Manassas, in 1943 and was drafted into the US Army the same year. He later attended Lynchburg College and graduated in 1950. That same year, in December, John married Shirley Pickrel of Altavista.
After college graduation, John began a long and successful career in public education for Fairfax County Public Schools. His first teaching and coaching position was at Fairfax High School. He then became athletic director for McLean High School, before going on to become assistant principal at W.T. Woodson High School, and then principal at George C. Marshall High School. In 1979, John would finish his career in public education as the first principal of South Lakes High School. He retired in 1980, after serving many years as a public educator and administrator. He and his wife, Shirley left Northern Virginia and moved to Lake of the Woods, Locust Grove, where they enjoyed living in their house on the golf course until 2015, when they made their final move to Ashby Ponds, Ashburn.
John is survived by his wife, Shirley P. Broaddus; children J. Steven Broaddus and Jill B. Tegethoff; grandchildren, Scott Broaddus, Katie Ball, Mark Tegethoff and Lisa Martin and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 28, 2016, at the Lake of the Woods Church, Locust Grove, with Rev. Tom Schaefer officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church. A private family burial will follow the reception at 2:00 p.m. in the Culpeper National Cemetery.
