EDWARD CLAYTON Obituary

Edward Paul Clayton of Clovis, CA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. Ed started working for Cal Fire as a Seasonal Firefighter 1 in 1978, and retired as a Fire Captain at Miramonte Camp in December of 2014, having served the State of California for his entire career. In his retirement, Ed enjoyed following his son Trevor and the Fresno State Men's Golf Team. One of his greatest delights was learning he was going to be grandparent in March of 2017, to the child of Kevin and Rashandra. Ed loved animals and the wilderness. He cared for forest animals near his home when he was younger, and kept chickens, dogs and bees as an adult. He spent many years bee keeping, providing Clayton Honey to friends and family. He is remembered as a mentor, leader and friend. Ed loved supporting his family in their endeavors, and keeping up with his large set of family and friends. Ed is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carolee Clayton; son, Kevin Clayton; daughter-in-law, Rashandra Clayton; son, Trevor Clayton; siblings, Diane Gallegos, Mike Clayton, Sharian Clayton, Chuck Clayton, Gary Clayton, Tom Clayton, David Clayton, Rob Clayton and Don Clayton; and many nieces and nephews. A Viewing will be held at Boice Funeral Home in Clovis, CA, on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at Northeast Assembly of God Church on Thursday, December 15, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. with a Graveside Interment at Clovis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service Center's Silent Sleigh Program. Ed supported the community with his time, volunteer hours and strong support of his wife's lifelong service to the DHH community, DHHSC, 5340 N Fresno St., Fresno, CA 93710, cc. Silent Sleigh. How does one even begin to eulogize someone as great as Ed Clayton. He was one of the sweetest, kindest, yet humblest guys I knew. He never said a bad word about anyone or criticized anything. He was all about being a worker bee to get the job done. He had great leadership abilities paired with humility. He set his sights on getting the job done, not worrying about getting credit or recognition. I would have loved to have him become scout leader of our troop and even approached him about it, but his Cal Fire job did not allow him the opportunity. My sincere condolences to Carolee, Kevin, Rashandra, Trevor and the rest of the family.

Ed was one of the kindest and sweetest men I worked with. No matter the time, no matter what Ed was doing, he always took the time to say hello and ask how you were doing with the utmost sincerity. He was a very genuine Human Being. Thank you for that Ed, I will save some Bit-O-Honey for you, Requiescat in Pace Captain.

Ed was my very dear friend. We met at Fresno City College in 1979 as we both attended the Fire Academy. The following 4 years we worked at Blasingame, Hurley, and Millerton Fire Stations. We attended Fresno City College together.
I would go with him when he worked his bees. We would go up to Millerton and Huntington Lake together often. He got a Firefighting job in the mid eighties in Sunnyvale at the Lockheed Space Company. I followed him there and we worked another 5 years together. I went on to the UC Berkeley Fire Dept as he returned to Fresno to work for Fig Garden Fire. I retired from Alameda County as an Haz-Mat Engineer and Acting Truck Captain in 2014.
I have so many fond memories of my Dear Friend Ed.

My deepest condolences to the Clayton family. I remember Eddie as such an energetic boy with an upbeat attitude, and I was always amazed at the flips and dives he (and his brothers) could accomplish off the Chawanakee pool shower house roof, or from the bridge at Redinger Lake. It was a pleasure to reconnect with him years later on facebook, to find he had spent his life protecting the mountains, and was as kind and upbeat as I remembered him to be. Again, so sorry for your loss. -Carol Lambrecht

Ed was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. He always had a smile on his face and never had a bad thing to say about anyone. It is sad to see such a great guy, husband, father and grandfather pass away so suddenly. Our hearts hurt for the Clayton family and we do not even know what to say that would heal their hearts. Ed is certainly in heaven looking down on his entire family right now and I hope that gives them some comfort.

I am shocked to hear of Ed's passing and left with deep sadness. My sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
My first day as a seasonal firefighter for CDF started in the summer of '86, fresh out of high school. Ed's warm, welcoming, smiling face and hearty laugh was the first to met me at the door of Blasingame Station. He immediately took this young kid under his wing and not only taught me the job, but became a big brother I never had and a father figure I'd always yearned for. He had the skill of listening like no other person I've met. He'd look at you in the eyes and feel what you're feeling. After dinner with our crew at Blasingame, he pushed me to join him for some PT which involved hiking the hill across the station. He was like a mountain goat, running up and down that steep hill 3 times before I could do it once. He also took great pride in keeping the station lawns beautifully green and would water them by hand every night. It was during those times we'd have long talks about life. He helped me through the heart ache of a broken relationship, shared stories of past fire seasons, and taught me and showed me how Capt. Jack Nutter and our fire crew was our family away from our family and should be treated with the same love and respect. He always did things deliberately and took great pride in fine detail. He was my model when I needed it most in my life, both as a firefighter who loved the job and as a true man who loved his life and the people and world around him. I will always feel blessed for the few years I spent with Ed. In that relatively short amout of time, his influence on me has lasted my lifetime. This world will be less without him, but the lives he's touched will remain enriched forever because of him. Thank you Ed.

Ed and Carolee were very involved with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Our son and Kevin traveled that road together, becoming Eagle Scouts. Ed was very much a part of the boys attaining this Scouting honor. We have many fond memories of those experiences and many memories of Ed and his contributions. Ed's smile and always having a warm greeting will be missed. It was an honor to have known him. Bollinger Family

This is such an unexpected and huge loss for everyone. Ed was just the absolute most amazing person. I am so lucky to have known him and am having a hard time understanding why he was taken at such a great time in his and Carolee's life. I send all my love and hugs to you Carolee and the rest of our family. Until we meet again Ed...
