Ann Campney Obituary

Ann Campney

Amherst, MA - Ann Shaaber Campney, 92, died on October 3, 2023, at her home in Amherst, MA.

She was born September 3, 1931, in Wyomissing, PA, to Ruth Goetz Shaaber and Harry M. Shaaber. She had one sister, Joan S. Fletcher, who predeceased her.

Ann attended Wyomissing High School and had many friends there with whom she stayed in touch for the rest of her life. She graduated from Skidmore College, with a major in music, in 1953.

Ann met her future spouse, Harry K. Campney, Jr. in 1954, and they married in 1955. They had two daughters, and the family lived in Whately, MA for many years. When Ann and Harry divorced, Ann moved to Amherst, where she served as the executive secretary of the Amherst Chamber of Commerce and was the first woman elected to the Amherst Rotary Club in 1987.

Ann's hobbies and interests included music (playing the piano), playing tennis and golf, bridge, and many crafts, including sewing, needlepoint, knitting and quilting. Ann was a fan of many UMASS sports teams especially men's basketball over the years. She was also an avid fan of her grandchildren's sports teams, and she loved visiting and staying in touch with all her friends. She especially enjoyed annual summer trips to Stone Harbor, NJ. with high school friends.

She is survived by her daughters and their spouses, Lisa J. Campney and Dave Trop, and Julia and Christopher Irving, and five grandchildren: Grant and Cole Irving, and Sarah (Liam Stowe), Claire and Eli Trop. Ann also leaves her niece, Anne Fletcher.

A gathering for friends and neighbors is being planned. There will be no services. Ann's ashes will be buried at the Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, PA.

A very special thank you to the Hospice of the Fisher Home, Ester Gomes and Inieda Correia of Gomes Home Health Care, Hadley, MA., and Donna Poli and Judith Hudson and many special neighbors. Memorial Donations may be made to the Hospice of the Fisher Home, 1165 North Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA 01002.

I known Ann for 25 years servicing her Heating and AC.When my daughter was born, she knitted my daughter a sweater. When I purchased my first house in 2006 she gave me some mint that she was growing and when I moved again I transplanted it to my new house 2012 so I always have mint, remembering where it came from to this day.SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.

Ann was such a true and faithful friend to my mother, Phyllis Heronemus. She was a sparkling personality and like a member of our family, included in many of our family events, weddings, graduations, anniversaries! I felt blessed by her friendship with my mother who pre-deceased her by quite a few years now. Love to all who love her!

Ann was such a wonderful and dear friend, tennis/golf partner and bridge buddy of my mother, Phyllis Heronemus. As a family, we have been grateful for Ann's continued support and love of our family in Amherst for decades. I am sorry that I have just learned of her passing, as she attended our older sister ,Lee's, Celebration of Life in 2019. We have thought of her often, even being here in New Castle, NH for our mother's bridge group gatherings at "The Beach". She truly was a wonderful person. Please accept our belated, but heartfelt condolences. Ellen Heronemus Bryan
