I met Charlie in my senior year at U.Mass. when he became my advisor, and got to know him better thirty years later through Western Mass. Writing Project. He was a man of quiet strength and someone who encouraged everyone he came in contact with. My condolences to the family. The world just lost a gem.

One year when I was running the Boston Marathon, Charlie and I found ourselves next to each other soon after the start and we ran most the race together. He was always very supportive of women runners. It was at a time when women were new to the Boston Marathon and he was surprised to hear the flack woman runners received. When one spectator yelled, "Women belong in the bedroom" when we ran by, Charlie replied with a comment that both surprised and delighted me. He was always such a gentleman that his off-color comment amazed me but was right on. He had a healthy competitive spirit and was an inspiration for other athletes. This world is a better place because of Charlie and his caring ways.

Charlie was my English professor in 1975 and 76. Largely due to his his encouragement, I became an English teacher. In the classroom I tried to emulate his "guide on side" approach. He was a fine teacher.

My sincere condolences to Kay and the Moran children and grandchildren. Although he and I were in different departments at UMass (he in the English Department and I in Afro-American Studies), we had many conversations that, though they began around the subject of writing, widened to cover many more subjects over the years. I valued Charlie's insights more than I think he knew.
May this consummate teacher now rest in peace.

Charlie and Kate Moran, ran a reading and writing program at the old Hampshire County jail on Union Street in Northampton during the mid to late 1970's.
I worked there at the time and spoke with Charlie from time to time. I was a Viet Nam veteran who had went back to school and dropped out several course's short of my bachelors degree. Charlie, encourage me to finish, and with his help I did. I later went on to teach a number of years at HCC as an adjunct professor teaching for 20 years. So Charlie not only touched my life but indirectly touched all of my students.
Our paths never crossed again, but you had a profound effect on me.
Rest in peace, and condolences to Kate and the Moran family and friends.
