Maureen Mahar Obituary

MAUREEN "MO" MAHAR

Florence, MA - Maureen Curran Mahar "Mo", age 60, passed away on January 24th, 2023 at her office at Bank ESB. Maureen was born on July 26, 1962 to Robert Mahar and Eileen Curran Mahar. She attended Florence parochial and public schools and graduated from Northampton High School in 1980. She graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY in 1984 and then returned to Northampton. While working at local banks she received her MBA from the Isenburg School of Management in 1996. She also attended the Massachusetts Bankers School and the National School of Banking.

Maureen started her banking career working summers at the First National Bank in Northampton. After finishing Skidmore she worked at the Northampton Institution for Savings, a place where she met many life-long friends. Maureen worked at Woronoco Savings Bank and for the past several years, she worked at Bank ESB in Easthampton where she was Vice President and Commercial Lender where she continued to make many friends.

Maureen believed in volunteerism. She was involved in many civic organizations: serving on the board of Dollars for Scholars and Habitat for Humanity for many years. Through the bank she volunteered with Highland Valley Eldercare, the Money Management Program, and Hilltown Cooperative Charter School. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Annunciation thrift shop, and serving meals at the Interfaith Cot Shelter. She was an active parishioner at the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.

Maureen was very physically active, she walked or went to the gym every morning. Her favorite activity was golfing. She was a member at Wyckoff and Northampton Country Club, but played many courses in Western MA, the Cape, and Florida. Mo was lucky enough to get two holes-in-one. Both on the same day, May 30th, but 6 years apart. While Mo loved to hit a great shot and have a low score, it was the glass or three of chardonnay with her friends at the 19th hole that she enjoyed the most.

She leaves behind her father, Robert, her two siblings, Thomas Mahar and his wife Deborah of Whately, and Patricia Mahar and her husband Patrick Diggins of Florence. She also leaves nieces and nephews; Maggie (Matt) West, Ann Mahar, Elizabeth (Steve) Yvon, Michael (Priscilla) and Peter (Bethany) Mahar and Molly, Jack, and Erin Diggins. In addition, she leaves four grand nephews, Aiden and Colin West, Jamison Yvon, and Greyson Mahar; her aunts Margaret Dowd of Westfield and Marilyn Curran of Canton and several cousins. Along with many friends, coworkers and fellow golfers.

She was predeceased by her mother, Eileen, brother Edward "Ned" and her sister Catherine Mahar.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, January 29th from 1:00-4:00 pm at Czelusniak Funeral Home, 173 North Street, Northampton. The funeral will be held on Monday, January 30th at 9 am from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at Annunciation Chapel, 85 Beacon Street Florence. The burial will be private at a future date arranged by the family.

My deepest sympathy to all her family and friends. Athough my relationship was that of a simple commercial customer, I can say that she was by far the most courteous and helpful loan person I have known in my fifty years of experience. She will be sorely missed.

From the moment I started at Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity Maureen was willing to lend her expertise in finance to me and the organization. She had already been volunteering for years and dedicated more than a decade to the organization on the finance committee. She had an easy laugh, a keen intellect and a generosity of spirit that will never be forgotten.

She will be missed.

I met Mo years ago when my husband Bobby moved me to New England. She was one of the gals of Wycoff as I´d come to call them. I was a fish out of water as they´d say but Mo was kind to me & made me feel welcome. My hope is that she & my beloved sister in law Tami are hanging out at the 19th hole Prayers to her family
