June 16, 1919 - Dec. 21, 2011
Robert H. McPike, 92, of Corvallis died Dec. 21 in Corvallis.
He was born in 1919 in Heltonville, Ind., to Harry and Ethel McPike. He graduated from Bedford High School in 1938. During the two years that followed, he attended Indiana University and Indiana State Teachers College, studying mechanical drawing and industrial science. During his college summers, he worked for the National Youth Administration and the Civilian Conservation Corps.
In 1937, he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Bob spent one year on active duty as a U.S. Navy radio operator, and was honorably discharged in May 1941. In July 1941, he was inducted into the U.S. Army, and in 1942, was stationed at Avery Park, where he met Maxine, whom he married.
After spending a one-year tour in Europe during World War II (Sept. 5, 1944 - Sept. 23, 1945), he made his home in Philomath and Corvallis for the next 64 years.
Bob was an active member of the Philomath community, and provided many years of service that made the community a better and safer place to live. During those next 64 years, he was a Philomath Rural Fire District director, secretary/treasurer for eight years, and a volunteer fireman for the Philomath Fire Department for 15-plus years.
Bob also served as a Benton County Special Deputy Sheriff for more than 20 years, and a Philomath Police Reserve officer for 10 years. After retiring in 1980, Bob spent many years volunteering at the Philomath Elementary School in the grandparent program, and as a technical support person for teachers and students. A longtime member and volunteer of College United Methodist Church, Bob was Sunday School superintendent for 30-plus years.
Bob, the father of five children, was always actively involved in Philomath High School activities. He ran the chains for football games, and enjoyed being a supporter of most Philomath High activities even after his children were out of school.
Bob's life was one of service to his family, community and country. We thank him for his service and sacrifices!
He was a member of the Masons. His hobbies included singing, fishing, hunting, flower gardening, stamp collecting and photography.
He served in the Navy from May 9, 1937, to May 16, 1941, and the Army from July 14, 1941, to Oct. 3, 1945.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine McPike of Corvallis; sons Robert E. McPike of Philomath, and Richard H. McPike of Portland; daughter Alice McPike-Monk of Fairfield, Iowa; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughters Diane Marshall and Dorothy Saunders.
