Thelma Chandler Obituary

Oct. 26, 1907 - Nov. 5, 2007

Thelma Iva Long Chandler, long-time Bandon resident, passed away in Corvallis on Monday. Born the eldest of 10 on Oct. 26, 1907, in Lardo, Idaho, she celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends on Saturday, Oct. 27, in Corvallis.

Thelma grew up in Bandon and graduated from Bandon High School in 1926. After preparation in Normal School at Ashland, she taught school in Agness, and at Seaside School on the Seven Devils Road. Following a 25-year break, she returned to the classroom at Bandon Heights Primary School until retirement. She completed her bachelor's degree in 1966 at Southern Oregon College in Ashland. Since 1996, she has resided at Samaritan Village in Corvallis.

Thelma was predeceased by her husband, George, in 1962 and her son, Leonard "Bud," in 2002. She is survived by daughters Marjorie Chandler of Olympia, Wash., and Dorothy and Bill Thomas of Corvallis; sons Don and Roberta Chandler of Brookings and Ben and Marjorie Chandler of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; and Bud's wife, Gwen Chandler of Albany; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters: Patricia Staten and Leola Hultin of the Bandon area and Irene Berry of North Bend, as well as numerous other relatives.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the First Baptist Church in Bandon. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice, 1046 Sixth Ave. S.W., Albany, OR 97321.
