CARL VANDERZANT Obituary
Dr. Carl Vanderzant, 78, of San Angelo passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, in a local hospital. Dr. Vanderzant was a native of the Netherlands, educated (B.S. and M.S.) at the State Agricultural University of Wageningen, the Netherlands, and at Iowa State University (M.S., Ph.D.) at Ames. He joined the faculty at Texas AandM University in 1953 as an assistant professor, rose through the ranks to professor and retired in 1990. He devoted over 40 years to teaching and research at Iowa State University and Texas AandM University. An internationally recognized and respected food microbiologist, he published some 170 scientific papers and several book chapters. His studies related to problems concerning the safety and quality of foods and food-borne illness. However, he considered teaching and contact with students his most important task. In 1969 he received the Faculty Distinguished Award in Teaching from the Association of Former Students at Texas AandM University. In addition to his teaching and research duties and family responsibilities, he enjoyed reading books on military history and going to the mountains to fish. Any credit related to professional or personal achievements he attributed to his parents, who gave him their love and encouraged him to get an education, and to the Jesuit fathers of his high school, who laid the foundation for his university career and outlook on life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dr. Erma Schumacher-Vanderzant. He is survived by two sons, Dr. Chris Vanderzant and wife, Michelle, of San Angelo and Greg Vanderzant and wife, Daniela, of Dallas; five grandchildren; and a sister in Almelo, the Netherlands. He was a member of Holy Angels Church in San Angelo. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 29, at Holy Angels Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Greenwell officiating, followed by burial in Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Catholic Outreach Service, 102 N.
