Richard Newman Obituary

Richard Joseph Newman, 84, of Great Falls, a Navy veteran and retired building contractor, died of natural causes Friday, Aug. 26, at a local care facility.

His memorial service is 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunrise Presbyterian Church. Schnider Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Richard was born June 19, 1927, to Frank and Ethel Newman in Great Falls, Mont., where he was raised and educated, graduating from Great Falls High School.

He joined the Navy in 1945 and served on a destroyer deployed to the Mediterranean. He was hon-orably discharged in 1948.

He married Joyce Earl on May 7, 1949, in Great Falls.

After the Navy, he served as a carpenter apprentice and later worked as a contractor in Great Falls for 50 years, until retiring.

Richard was active in Scouting while his three boys were growing up, and enjoyed seeing each one earn his Eagle Scout award. He was a Cubmaster and Scoutmaster, earning many awards himself, including the Silver Beaver award, Distinguished Scouter and the George Meany award. He helped build the dining hall at Camp Napi, the Scout Silver Beaver building in Great Falls and the Garrison Memorial at Camp Kendall.

Richard also was a member of the Elks Club and the VFW. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, and making and refinishing furniture.

Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Joyce Newman of Great Falls; a daughter, Vicki (Dick) Walser and their daughter, Jennifer, of Potlatch, Idaho; sons Daryl (Karen) Newman of Granby, Colo., and children Amy Carlson and her four children, Elly, Ben, Suzanna and Megan, all of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jeremy (Emy) Newman and their three children, Thad, Mia and Cole, all of Castle Rock, Colo., Nicholas Newman and two children, Shayleigh and Dean, all of Castle Rock, Leigh Ann (Trevor) Stiverson of Loveland, Colo., Amy (Aaron) Yessick and their two children, Blane and Harlan, all of College Station, Texas, and Matthew Pyland, stationed at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.; Dan (Jeanette) Newman and their family, the Rev. Matthew, Ashley, Audrey, Mark, Luke, Mary, Maggie and John, all of San José, Calif.; son Dave Newman of Nashville, Tenn.; and his faithful and loyal companion, his dog, Roaddog.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Ethel Newman; and a sister, Margaret Treu.

Memorials are suggested to the Boy Scouts of America, 820 17th Ave. S., Great Falls, MT 59405, or a charity of the donor's choice.

I am so sorry to hear about Dick, I remember him fondly of my scouting days with Troop 23(?)at the VFW and numerous meetings at your house and shop. He was truly one of the great ones!! Looks like you have a tremendous family and legacy! My sincerest and deepest sympathies.
