Marcia Flow Obituary

Marcia Flow

Greenville

Marcia Flow, widow of Claude Lennox Flow, Jr., daughter of John Allen and Ruth Bell Parrish, went to heaven on Tuesday, November 29th. Her funeral will be at Mackey Mortuary on Friday, December 2nd, at 1PM, with visitation from 11:30-1PM, and burial at Greenlawn Cemetery in Spartanburg, SC at 3:30PM.

Surviving are her son, Claude Lennox Flow, III, of Greenville, daughter, Ruth Flow Lake Morrow, son-in-law, Michael John Morrow, of Taylors, SC, grandson, Kenneth William Lake, Jr., granddaughter-in-law, Michelle Lake, and grandchildren Laura and Will Lake of Lexington, SC, and sister, Jackie Ladshaw of Oakwood, GA.

Marcia grew up in Spartanburg, SC, where she graduated from Spartanburg High School and Converse College with a full scholarship to major in Piano. After moving to Greenville, she taught piano for 65 years and played the piano for the Greenville Little Theater for 25 years. She also played for the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, McCarter Presbyterian Church, and St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Taylors, SC.

Being active in the community, Marcia was a long-time member of the Wade Hampton Gardens Community Club, the Music Teachers Association, The Music Club of Greenville, The South Carolina Federation of Music Clubs, and the National Federation of Music Clubs. For the last 10 years, Marcia was the pianist for the Rolling Green Village Retirement Community, where she played for the chorus, the memorial services, and the vesper services. Marcia was the founding member of the "Scoopers" Band, a group of musicians who played all over Greenville for 40 years. She was the piano player for her husband's restaurant, the Big Scoop, for 15 years. She also was a former member of the Spartanburg Philomonic Music Club. Receiving the Rose Fay Thomas Fellow, the Converse College 100 Award for Community Service, and having the Marcia Flow Piano Scholarship were highlights of her life in music.

Marcia was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, where she served as pianist for 30 years, and then as a choir member. She was active in the Women of the Church, church suppers, and activities. She received the Life Long Membership Award of the Women of the Church. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greenville for 30 years, where she was in the choir and the pianist for the Good Neighbor Class. During her younger years, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg for 25 years.

Besides music, Marcia loved traveling and visiting relatives and friends. She had a big interest in genealogy and people. She always had a welcoming heart and a sweetness of spirit. We will miss her!

Not sure what to say?

Sincere sympathies to the family of Mrs. Flow, who was a cousin of my cousin, Ann Going Purcell of Columbia. Ann asked me to look up Mrs. Flow's obituary to send to her, but I had no idea that I may know Mrs. Flow. As soon as I saw her picture and read about her being a pianist, I didn't have to read any further to know that she was the beloved Mrs. Flow of Flow's Big Scoop, a favorite haunt of my father who worked near the restaurant in the 1970s. We all loved to hear her tear that ice cream parlor piano up! She was so sweet, and she would talk to us when she wasn't busy. I loved their hamburgers and their bubble gum ice cream. It didn't have gum in it, but it had that flavor, one I have never found again. God Bless Mrs. Flow's memory. Wow, a piece of my past came home tonight as I read this tribute and reflected on fond memories.

Sad eyes. She was my piano teacher from elementary school up to my senior year in high school. I never knew how to get in touch with her Otherwise I would have gone to visit. Hopes and prayers go out to her and her family.

Mrs Flow was my piano teacher as a child. Each year I bring out my childhood Christmas carol lesson book- with her sweet writing throughout. This year my kids are sitting down and playing the carols. She leaves a legacy of love for music and a heart for the Lord. Prayers for you all today as you celebrate her life.

Ruthie and Lenny,I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. What a great lady she was. I have wonderful memories from childhood summers spent visiting you in Greenville. Marcia did so much for so many, but I always appreciated her support for the Band cousins. My mother thought the world of her. Because of health issues and an out-patient procedure,I will not be able to attend the service, but please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My parents, Clifford and Neal Morrow, lived down the street from your mom and dad in Spartanburg. When I was born, they asked my four year old brother what he wanted to name me. He said "Marcia " after your mom because he loved to hear her play the piano. As they say, the rest is history. I have played the piano since before I was three and have been playing ever since. Thank you, Marcia Flow, for allowing me to share your name and your love for music!!!❤
