Gerda Mayer-Wittmann Obituary

Mayer-Wittmann, Dr. Gerda
Gerda Mayer-Wittmann was born on September 21, 1924 to Alma (Siemsen) Rotermund and Carl Rotermund in Bremen, Germany. Her twin sister, Edda, survives her in Hamburg, and her elder sister, Inge, lives in Bremen.
Married to Karl Matthias Mayer-Wittmann on June 23,1950, they had five children - Diethild, Gerhard, Heide, Elke, and Norbert. Also grieving are Margaret, Pierre, and Joseph, spouses of Gerhard, Heide, and Elke. With 14 grandchildren and their first great-grandchild born in August of this year, Gerda's devotion to family far outshined her significant scholastic achievement of Doctorate of Engineering with an emphasis on Architecture, where prize awards let buildings rise in Germany and the United States, which will stand for many years to come. Gerda's favored element was all beauty that the eyes let in - with achievements and prizes in oil painting, a knack for all made by hand such as sewing and home craft, her devotion to her German heritage through the Singing Society she formed and led for thirty years, her most favored craft was that of being a mother and wife. With her strong and creative mind, the norm was always challenged in search of efficiency, betterment, or creativity.
Gerda lived a full life of family, travel, art, music, and joy of the day. She will be missed by many who adored her.
A Memorial Service will take place on Sunday, November 22, 2015, 2:00 pm, at The First Congregational Church of Greenwich, at 108 Sound Beach Avenue in Old Greenwich. In lieu of Flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to St. Pauls Church of NYC (212)929-1955 or email [email protected] To leave an online condolence please visit www.castiglionefh.com

Gerda was always eager for a laugh, a good conversation, or a new adventure. We always loved seeing her pedal by the house on her tandem bike/buggy. And she was a killer bridge player. I'm happy I was lucky enough to know her.
