Joseph Brooks Obituary

JOSEPH E. BROOKS A retailing legend according to the New York Times, Joseph E. Brooks was born November 2, 1927. He died yesterday, January 26, 2012, of natural causes. Mr. Brooks was famous for taking over retail stores and making their sales increase dramatically; stores including Filene's, Rike's Burdines, Lord & Taylor, and AnnTaylor Stores. Mr. Brooks was Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of AnnTaylor Stores Corporation and AnnTaylor, Inc. AnnTaylor Stores Corporation is an internationally known women's specialty store which grew under Mr. Brooks' leadership. Mr. Brooks, together with Merrill Lynch Capital Partners, Inc., acquired AnnTaylor in February 1989. The Company increased its sales and EBITDA by more than 50%, introduced its own private label shoe line, entered 34 new markets, and achieved sales per square foot of over $700 among the highest in retailing. AnnTaylor went public in an initial public offering in May of 1991. Mr. Brooks was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Lord & Taylor from 1975 through 1986. After eleven years of extraordinary growth under Brooks' leadership, Lord & Taylor's sales increased from approximately $200,000,000 to $900,000,000. Lord & Taylor's operating profits grew to a compound rate of 17.5% per year despite aggressive store expansion and the decade of erratic periods of growth among the retailing giants. Mr. Brooks extended the Lord & Taylor image of updated classic American fashion across the United States, expanding the 19 stores he had inherited to 46. Lord & Taylor expanded into Florida, and intensified its presence in Washington, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Dallas; along with the existing markets of the New York metropolitan area, Hartford, and others. Mr. Brooks was elected to the Board of Directors of May Company Department Stores in 1986 and was Senior Executive Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors for Associated Dry Goods Corporation from 1975 through 1986. Mr. Brooks headed Filene's and Rike's, and was associated with Burdines, all divisions of Federated Department Stores. Mr. Brooks and his wife, Alice K. Brooks, launched the International Symposium on the Neurosciences at Harvard Medical School, established a Faculty Scholar at the Center for Blood Diseases at the University of Miami, School of Medicine, and are Third Century Fellows at Harvard Medical School. Most recently, he has served on the Advisory Board of New York Hospital - Cornell Medical Center, the Board of Directors of the Michael Wolk Heart Foundation, Inc., the Board of Directors of the international Tennis Hall of Fame, the International Advisory Board for the Harvard AIDS Institute, and was involved in a multitude of community activities and charities. I had the privilege of managing Lord and Taylor´s main floor on 5th Avenue in New York City while Joe ran all 11 floors. He was a great leader and without micro managing he knew everything that went on in that store. I learned key management skills from him that brought me success in several businesses moving forward. We are sure to have many laughs about what went on behind the scenes when we meet again. Thank you Joe!

As his Cousin Claire, daughter of his father's sister Rose, I have only early memories of Joe before his left home, and took on his mother's maiden name (Brooks).
It still gives me a laugh remembering him running up and down the stairs while singing and portraying Danny Kaye. My biggest regret is losing touch with my funny cousin. Rest in peace Joe.

Mr. Brooks was a titan of retail and - at the same time - an instant father to all who had the honor to work for him. When I began my retail career at Lord & Taylor, I came to understand how his careful hand and attention to detail lived on each and every floor - and in each interaction customers had with associates. I was fortunate to be asked to join his team at AnnTaylor, and it was there that I got to understand what it meant to work for a true leader, day in and day out. I was driven half crazy trying to live up to his standards, but that was only because he expected more from me each day. Nothing meant more than a note from J.E.B.

Many years later, as I began to build companies, my experiences with Mr. Brooks gave me the confidence to lead, and I never forgot the lessons he taught: Treat every associate as if they were a member of your family; honor acts of greatness when you see them; build the brand; and, most important of all: make sure someone is taking a lot of pictures! ;)

When I sold my company, the first person I wanted to tell was Mr. Brooks, and his letter to me after the sale is among my most treasured possessions.

My thoughts are with Alice, Tom, Elizabeth, Victoria, and all the kids.

J.E.B: You live in everything that I do. May your name be a blessing and may the source of peace bring peace to those who mourn.

Joe Brooks had the ability to see the potential in people that others could not. He was blessed with a vision of the future and ensured that his vision was executed at the highest standard. As a retail giant of his era, I was fortunate to be able to work for him and learn from him at both Lord & Taylor and Ann Taylor. I am the executive and person I am today due in large part to his mentorship. God Bless Alice and the family. He will be missed by many, including me.

I was lucky enough to work for Mr. Brooks from 2003 to 2006. Although brief, the time spent in his employ had an amazing impact on my life. His charisma, charm, brilliance, and empathy were unparalleled. He recruited me from the Disney Company to work for him in Greenwich, thousands of miles from my family and friends. Taking me under his wing, I almost felt I was adopted as a member of the family. Besides my own parents, no one has ever done so much for me or cared so deeply about my life. Mr. Brooks was more than a boss, but also a mentor and a grandfather to me during my tenure with Joseph E. Brooks & Associates. He was a remarkable man. My wife and I have Mr. Brooks to thank for so many of the joys we celebrate today. He helped us start our life and our family together, because of his kindness, thoughtfulness, and generosity. His loss is irreplaceable to mankind. I hope Mr. Brooks knows how much he was loved, and how much he will be missed. We celebrate his incredible life, and offer our sincere condolences to Mrs. Brooks, his children, and his grandchildren. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all, and everyone who was fortunate enough to have crossed paths with such an amazing man.
