Edwin Gaylord PORTER

1921 - 2018

PORTER, Edwin Gaylord Of Brookville, OH, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018. He was born in Keene, OH on September 18, 1921 to the late Harry and Doris (Gaskill) Porter. He was a 1939 graduate of Mingo Junction High School and was a 1948 graduate of the Ohio State University, where he was a member of the Varsity Track and Field Team, and was captain of the 1948 team that won the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Later that summer he participated in the U.S. Olympic trials in Minneapolis for the 1948 Olympiad in London. In World War II, Ed served in the Army Air Corp with the Military Police in Brazil. He was a member of the Community United Methodist Church in Brookville, the Brookville Kiwanis Club and the Ohio State Varsity O.He was a teacher and basketball coach at Waynesville High School for three years and worked 36 years as a salesman for the National Tag Company. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years Margaret (Smith) Porter; son Randall Porter; daughter Gail Porter and husband Nick Catanzariti; grandchildren Erica (Clark) Brown, Ben Porter and Samantha Makar, Gina Catanzariti and Nick Catanzariti; 3 great grandchildren; brother-in-law Bill Smith and wife Rita; sisters-in-law Jeanne Smith, Maxine Smith and Virgie Armstrong. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Curtis and wife Betty; sister-in-law Helen Brewer and husband Kenneth; brothers-in-law Richard and James Smith. A memorial service to honor Ed's life will be held at 12:00 PM Saturday, May 19, 2018 at the Community United Methodist Church 114 Hay St. Brookville, OH. Friends may call on the family from 10:00 AM 12:00 PM Saturday at the Church.
