Ralph "Dwight" Day, 62, of Jasper passed away June 26 th . He was the beloved son of Ralph Gordon and Betty Jo Day. Born on September 16, 1961, in Harrison, Arkansas, he lived his whole life in the beauty of the valleys and hills that he loved.
For 31 years, he worked at Wabash, earning the admiration of his colleagues. An avid outdoorsman, he had a passion for hunting and fishing, often preferring the solitude and quiet of an early morning spent in the deer blind or on the water. His talent for making fishing lures was well known amongst his friends and family. He loved to spend time riding, both horses and Harleys, not in any particular order. He worked hard his entire life and spent all his free time doing things for his family, building a beautiful life and going on great travel adventures with his wife Kate. But his greatest legacy is not one of material things: it's his family.
If you were to look at Dwight, you'd see a stoic, somewhat gruff man who didn't talk much and would very rarely smile in pictures. All of his tough exterior would melt in seconds the minute he would hold a grandchild in his arms. He was known as "The Baby Whisperer" for his ability to take a crying baby and get it to sleep in the comfort of his arms within minutes. The babies seemed to somehow instinctually know what we all came to learn: that Dwight treasured his family more than anything else on earth. He had always loved his sons Chris and Heath and when it came time to become stepfather to three grown kids: Beth, Paul and Lauren, he accepted and treated them as his own. They will tell you that he was the Dad he didn't have to be, but that everyone deserved. Dwight was often quiet amongst the chaos, but if you took the time, you'd figure out pretty quickly that he was a kindhearted, intelligent and patient man who would move
heaven and earth for the people he loved. Above all, Dwight cherished his time with his
grandchildren, creating memories that will be treasured. His quiet warmth and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Dwight was preceded in death by his mother and one son, Christopher. He leaves behind Christopher's mother Lori Collins Flanagan; his beloved son Heath Day (Shauna) and his mother Carol Henderson Toler; the love of his life and wife of 13 years, Katherine (Kate) Day; father, Ralph Gordon Day; stepson, Paul (Paige) Schuller; stepdaughter Beth (Jody) Carson; stepdaughter, Lauren Schuller; sister, Debra Beauchamp (Bobbie Paul); three grandchildren, Xander Day, Parker Schuller, and David Carson; and a large extended family of wonderful cousins.
