ALEXANDER, Dr. Albert "Champ" A local legend, educator and scholar, Dr. Albert A. "Champ" Alexander, passed on Monday (June 12, 2006), in Hartford. He was born on October 27, 1936 to the late Willie and Inez Ross-Alexander and was raised by his great-aunt, the late Clyde "Nanny" Wilson and his great-uncle, the late Albert Wilson of Tallahassee, FL. Albert was educated in the Leon County, FL school system attending the old Griffin School (elementary) and Florida A&M High School. Upon high school graduation in 1956, Albert earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education from Florida A&M University. He earned his Masters Degree in Health and Physical Education from Florida A&M University in 1962 and taught and coached at Howard Academy in Monticello, FL, and Southwest Elementary School in Tallahassee. In 1965, Albert left Tallahassee for Boston, MA, to attend Boston University where he received his PhD in Health and Education in 1969. He completed post-doctoral studies at Harvard University and taught as an adjunct professor at Harvard and Boston Universities. Dr. Alexander served for more than 30-years (1969-1999) as an administrator for the Connecticut Department of Education. During his long tenure, he served in numerous capacities, including the Office of Education Equity. After he retired, he worked as an educational consultant, and his major responsibility was to monitor the State of Connecticut's Desegregation Plan of Related Activities. Dr. Alexander worked closely in an advisory capacity with all of the state's 169 townships. He assisted those school districts which were not in compliance with developing a viable minority and majority student racial plan for education equity. He was the major architect of the 1988 Desegregation Report, submitted to former Education Commissioner, Gerald Terozzi. Dr. Alexander's expertise in this major report was the catalyst of a subsequent report in 1999 that resulted in specific strategies that gave rise to the emergence of hundreds of charter and magnet schools in the state of Connecticut. Dr. Alexander played a major role in some of Connecticut's Native American groups. One tribe in particular was the Mashantucket Pequot Indians. With the advent of major casinos in the state of Connecticut, the Native American Indian school population increased drastically. He served as an advisor, providing them with viable educational programs and strategies which resulted in the creation of an independent school system for Native American students. He leaves behind to mourn his passing, his wife Nancy Tyson-Alexander of North Coventry. He is preceded in death by a sister, the late Mae Eva Garner Wilson, St. Petersburg, FL and a brother the late Willie B. Alexander of Tallahassee, FL. Also mourning his passing are two sisters, Ollie Dell Parrish (George) of Monticello, FL and Dorothy A. Washington (Rollie) of Upper Marlboro, MD. Three brothers Shella Alexander (Jessie) of Upper Marlboro, MD; Dr. Robert L. Alexander (Janessa) of Mitchellville, MD; and Avon Alexander (Mildred) of Tallahassee, FL; a step-mother, Willie Mae Alexander of Tallahassee, FL; 16 nieces and nephews; 19 great nieces and nephews; a great-great nephew; in-laws, Evelyn Williamson, Mt. God has an amazing man with Him. I thank God for the man that's called Albert A. Alexander. This was my friend, uncle and father. We could and did talk to about EVERY AND ANYTHING. We knew that the strength our love for each other no one could NEVER be taken by ANYONE else. I feel his spirit with me today so powerful today. He is trying to tell me something and God is not ready for me to receive it. I will patiently wait for. I am so thankful for my grandmother (Inez Alexander) baby boy and my mother's (Ollie Dell)baby brother.
Love you Uncle Al,

To My Dearest Sister Nancy and the Alexander Family,
It is my continual prayer that the Lord will comfort and strengthen you and bless you with His peace that surpasses all understanding. The fond memories of Al's gentle smile, quiet spirit, and sincere conversations will always be cherished in our hearts and minds. However, God's word in 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 (NIV)assures us: Brothers [and sisters], we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from the heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.
When we all get to heaven, what a glorious time it will be! Be encouraged and stay strong--that was Al's legacy. God bless.

To My Darling Al, Husband, Friend, Companion and the LOVE OF MY LIFE...
You will forever be rememered for the person who was always concerned for the welfare of others. The person who never gave up, and constantly fought for JUSTICE.
Al knew who he was and firmly stood his ground on issues when others would run away.
Albert, constantly spoke. "I WOULD RATHER SEE A SERMON THAN HEAR A SERMON." Al you taught me and many others so much about life, and you showed us how to make our lives count.
I will forever love you and will always cherish our wonderful life long memories.
Thank you my Darling. Rest now, Rest on in Peace. I do hope and pray that one day we shall meet again. You will forever be in my heart, and I miss you soooooo verrrrry, verrrrry much.... "The Lord Is Our Shephard."
Love you always and May God Bless You,

To my beloved Nancy,
I was very broken hearted when I heard of the lost of your husband Al. I'm so glad I got the chance to meet such a brillant minded person as he. Nancy, your tenderness and love for others has always made the difference in peoples lives that you touched. Just remember the good times you and Al shared and how he was always there for you. Keep on being the beautiful person you are inside and out. I'm sure he will always be in your heart and also in the hearts of others. The Lord has bless you to be a part of his life for alot of precious years. Keep on leaning on the everlasting arms of Jesus, for he won't put no more on you than you can bare. This too shall pass even though the nights right now seem sooo cold and dark. God works out all things after the counsel of his own will, things we don't understand--- Remember, God is Sovereign--So just trust him, it will all work out for the good. Here's a word from the Lord--(Jer. 29:11) For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. --He's gonna wipe away all of your tears. You see, God has a greater plan for you! Be strong my sister---God is not finished with you yet. We in Christ Jesus are all under construction-- a work in progress (smile). I Love you.
In Jesus,

Albert was a strong and inspiring person who has meant so much to me over the years since we first met at the Connecticut State Department of Education. It is sometimes extremely painful and sorrowful to know that I will never hear his voice and discuss his commentaries on life again. His ability to analyze situations and subjects enabled him to have solid and concrete information before he made comments, decisions or judgments. His loyalty to friends and confidants was laudatory and incomparable. Now, it is time for him to enjoy his summertime. I will miss him tremendously.

It is with deep sorrow in learning of the loss of my friend and former co-worker of 18 years, Al Alexander. Al will always be remembered with great fondness for his ability to ask (with that typical expressionless face) the obvious questions which led to simple and straightforward solutions -- in other words, he did much to help of government-types to cut through, for lack of a more accepting word, the bureaucratize and get on with the issues at hand.
He will also be remembered for his sense of humor that caused others to break-up in laughter while he only showed that Al Alexander-type grin.
Al Alexander was indeed one-of-a-kind, and will be deeply missed.
