Carolyn Cistulli Obituary

Carolyn Louise (Redden) Cistulli, aged 79, passed away on September 21st after a three-year battle with cancer. She was the matriarch of a large and loving family, and she fought the disease courageously and stubbornly until the very end surrounded by her family and friends. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 57 years, Joseph Cistulli of Brewster, Cape Cod, MA; her brother Edward Redden and his wife Anne, of Amelia Island, FL; her daughter Barbara Tuohy and husband, David, of Northport, Long Island, NY, and their children Madison, 18, and Heather, 16; her son Joseph and his wife, Arang, of Dallas, TX and their children Christina, 23, and Joseph, 21; her son Steven and his wife, Cheryl, of John's Creek, GA, and their children, Thomas, 21, and Megan, 19; her son, Mark, and his wife, Kristin, of West Hartford, CT, and their children, Scarlett, 16, David, 9, and Paul, 7. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Carolyn graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, CT in 1958. She became a registered nurse in 1961 and served in both the Emergency Room and Operating Room at Saint Mary's Hospital and served in multiple positions at Bristol Hospital. She received her BA in Psychology from CCSU in 1975, her Master's Degree in Administration from the University of Hartford in 1980, and a Sixth Year Certificate of Advanced Study from SCSU in 1983. She was the consummate educator, teaching in the Bristol, CT school system in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. She was Assistant Principal of Bristol Eastern High School, Principal of Bingham Elementary School, and Principal of Hubbell Elementary School, where she was instrumental in the school earning National Blue Ribbon status. Then, she became the Director of Instructional Programs, Curriculum, and Professional Development for the city until her retirement. She inspired students and colleagues alike with an indomitable will, a generous sense of humor, and a deep understanding of student needs. There are few who crossed her path unaffected by her larger-than-life personality and unwavering commitment to student success. Along the way, she proudly served several community and professional organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Visitation Committee, the Bristol Inlands Wetlands Committee, the Youth Commission, the Charter Revision Commission, and the Mayor's Bicentennial Commission, among others. In 2001, she and her husband retired to Cape Cod. There, she volunteered yearly for the Pan Mass Challenge, where she worked the medical tent, and the Nauset Newcomers, where she was elected President. She was widely known as a devoted mother and grandmother and a tremendous friend. She loved playing games like Monopoly and Dominoes with her children and grandchildren - games she never lost in spite of the rules – and hosting holidays and parties. She is legendary for her prowess at shopping and her affinity for stylish shoes. The family wishes to acknowledge the heroic dedication of the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Davenport Mugar Cancer Center and VNA Hospice as well as the legions of friends and neighbors who have supported the entire family through these difficult years. Given the current pandemic, there are no calling hours. She will be buried in Bourne National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. I just learned of Mrs Cistullis passing..
I am so sorry for the loss of her, prayers said for her family ..
She excelled at everything she did..
I was a student of Mrs Cistulli at Eastern HS, 1983&1984.. she took
me under her wing.. I took the VICA in 1983.. became a CnA.. she encouraged me to take it again my Sr year.. ( I won first place in the state competition and then went on to National competition .. all under her supervision and guidance)
I was unsure where to go to college.. I knew after taking her class I wanted to be aRN.. she suggested Salve Regina College In RI.. She was such A role model for me.. all good memories of her..
I kept in touch with her many years after 1984.. lost touch.. over the years..
She was such a dynamic teacher Nurse and role model..
My thoughts and prayers are with the family..

I worked with Carolyn during her career at Bristol Eastern High School. My favorite memory is a personal one. During the crazy days of Cabbage Patch dolls Carolyn heard that I was frantically searching for one for my daughter, Amy. She knew someone in Caldor’s & called in a favor. She gleefully let me know that I should go to the service desk & tell them my name. She had them put aside one for me & Amy had a wonderful Christmas. Thank you Carolyn! I never forgot your generosity.

I just heard that Carolyn has passed and I am so sad that we lost touch. She was such an important part of my career and life. She was my Assistant Principal at BE as well as my Principal at Bingham. She was a wonderful leader and always saw the best in me. There were many conversations, behind closed doors that devolved into tears of merriment as we shared stories about life, teaching, family.
She was responsible for my secondary job at NVCTC. I don't know what she told them but what I thought was an interview was just an explanation of my assignment. Whatever she had to say about me was good enough for them and that led to 13 years of shlepping down to Waterbury after my primary teaching assignment in Bristol.
My most sincere condolences to her family. I'm so grateful to have known her.

I must say, that I have been sitting here for a good 30 minutes trying to process the fact that Carolyn is no longer in this world. Sorry, but I cannot picture it. As a teacher, I remember quite clearly how Carolyn started the Nursing Program at Bristol Eastern High School. And within the Bristol Education system, Carolyn became a positive upward spiraling dynamo soon afterward. When it came to bettering people's and students' lives, she was a force majeure. Hardly anyone could keep up. A true whirlwind - and the Bristol school system was all the better for it. She had an agenda - and that agenda was to run whatever program or school she was in charge of with compassionate efficiency. That is, WITH the inclusion of, and compassion towards those students and teachers she oversaw. What a beautiful human being! Closer to my vantage point as a teacher at BCHS, Carolyn and Joe Sr. were/are the parents of beautiful kids. I had the pleasure of having Joe, Barbara, and Steve, but unfortunately I missed Mark. Great-great family. Cistulli family.....so very sorry for your loss. Terry Marselle

I’m am very sorry to hear about the passing of Mrs. Cistulli. She was a big part of my growing up in the old neighborhood in Bristol as Mark’s friend. I remember the countless sleepovers and the summer trips to Cape Cod so well and her integral part in making sure everyone had fun. My thoughts go out to the family.

I am truly sorry to hear about Carolyn's death. We shared a laugh or two at Naugatuck Valley Community College functions. That's how I will always remember her--laughing. My condolences to the family.
