Cory Cotugno Obituary

Cory M. Cotugno, 72, of Wethersfield, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and dear friend, passed away Monday, November 14, 2016 at Maple View Manor, Rocky Hill. Cory was born May 1, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Michael Thomas Cotugno and Eleanor Straub Poirier. He has resided in the Hartford area since 1963 where he was employed for many years at the Hartford Courant retiring in 2002. Cory had many passions including photography and gyros, but his greatest passion was for airplanes, both actual and models. While in San Diego, in 1974, he won a Piper Cub airplane in a raffle, and flew it back to Johnny Cake Airport in Harwinton, CT. Cory was a member of the New England Air Museum. He volunteered in its reconstruction following the 1979 tornado. He had a collection of model aircraft which he built and painted himself, along with a collection of model buses. Cory will be dearly missed by his son, Cory Clement Cotugno of Gig Harbor, WA; his daughter, Christine Michelle Cotugno and son-in-law Bruce Chandler, of Springfield, MA; an adored granddaughter, Jessica Tate-Cotugno; a cherished great granddaughter, Carmen Tate-Jones and two dear friends, Dana M. Roarke of Wethersfield and Danila Reese of Ocala, FL. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of Cory's family. Memorial donations can be made to charities involving Dogs, Children with Cancer, or New England Air Museum. Cory's funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. Cory and I were married for 19 years. I remember mostly his joy and pride in our children, Michelle and Clem. Cory had never spent much time around children before, and was surprised at the unexpected delight and joy as they grew.

On a personal note, I credit Cory with opening the real world to me, highlighted by our trips to New York. It was only after he showed me the real City that I gained a comfort level there. His love of gyros, mentioned above, began one night in 1972 when we followed our noses to a delicious smell emanating from a Broadway kiosk -- we ate them before and after the show, and every other chance we had.

His love of airplanes, most especially vintage, was deep; his knowledge of them, encyclopedic. In the late '70's we went to the Oshkosh EAA Convention, a memorable time. It was a lifelong passion.

Although our time together ended over 30 years ago, I still remember good influences he had on me and others. In particular, he had a knack for talking to young guys at crossroads, who years later would tell me advice they'd gotten from him had changed the course of their lives for the better.
