October 11, 2023

Dr. Donald G. Sukosky, (90), a 60-year resident of Glastonbury, CT., died on October 11, 2023. Son of August and Ida Sukosky, he grew up in East Hartford. He received degrees from Trinity College (1954), Harvard University (1958), and The Hartford Seminary (1972). Donald was the Senior minister for St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bridgeport and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Meriden before changing careers to work as a Professor at the University of Hartford for 35 years. In retirement, he continued to teach at Manchester Community College well into his 80's. An accomplished musician, Donald loved to play the piano and pipe organ, directing music and choirs at several local churches. An avid reader, he could always be found at the Glastonbury library. He loved his Saturday mornings with the men's prayer breakfast group at the First Church of Christ in Wethersfield. Donald also regularly attended Sunday services at the First Church of Christ in Glastonbury. He was preceded in death by a son, Peter Sukosky. He is survived by one son, David Sukosky, and his wife Jane: 4 Grandchildren, and 4 Great Grandchildren. Donald will be buried at the family plot at the Riverview Cemetery, Essex, CT., in a private memorial service at the convenience of the family.

Pastor Sukosky was our minister at Emmanuel Lutheran church in Meriden, Ct. I had the great fortune of being in his confirmation class in the 1960's and now at the age of 72 still vividly remember what a gifted teacher he was. Church attendance during his time at Emmanuel was never higher and he touched all of us with his wisdom and kindness. His presence at such a crucial time in my young life will always be cherished.

Don was a gift to so many people, myself included. He was a steady source of wisdom that I learned from on many occasions. I am so deeply saddened to hear of his passing. He will be missed in many ways. Peace to Don's family and friends in this time of grieving and celebration of a life faithfully lived.

I was sorry to hear that Don had passed so quickly. But it was fortunate in many ways that he was able to move close by you his family before his passing.
I will always remember Don at our first meeting at a neighborhood Christmas party. I was a marriage and family therapist, so we shared a lot of knowledge in the same field.. I remember saying to him how a little boy I worked with who is only 10 told me that he knew why they called us shrinks.. He said it´s because "you shrink the problem". We laughed because that was such a precious appreciation for the work that we did and to have it so articulately expressed by a 10 year old child. In our shared field, it is hard to see the strides you have made with therapy , and there are very few pats on the back. That was always the bond of our friendship for the past 15 years. When my husband died after a long illness in 2015 Don was a support to me, Always periodically checking in to see how I was doing. In essence, Don was a very good man. My deepest sympathies to you all. I miss him.

I am sorry to learn of Don's passing. He was an articulate personality, and the absolute model of a civil, responsive, thinking person. He had a great spiritual sensitivity that was always communicated to his colleagues and students. May his soul be at rest in the eternal light!

My condolences to the Sukosky family. When I joined Hillyer College as a new faculty member, Don was associate dean and a senior member of the department I joined. His thoughtful and insightful contributions during department and faculty meetings were appreciated and always served to move the discussion along. He cared about his students, his colleagues, and the College and University.

In my 41 years teaching at the University of Hartford, I never met a more complete gentleman than Don. Always caring, gentle, sincere, and thoughtful, he was the epitome of what a human being should be - a blessing to all around him.
