Earl F. West

1930 - 2023

Earl West, 92, of Pomfret Center CT passed away peacefully at home on February 12, 2023 of Leukemia. He was born on May 28, 1930 in Hartford CT, son of Ivan and Helen (Sweeney) West. He joined the Navy during the Korean War where he proudly served from 1947 to 1951. He was on both of the only icebreaker ships, one of which made history as going the furthest north during its expedition to Greenland. He had many tales to tell of his time in Greenland, Iceland, Holland, and his time with the Eskimos. He spent most of his life in Tolland, CT. where he built his home and raised his family. Many summers were spent at Sun Valley Resort Club in Stafford CT. Earl was an electrician and worked at various hospitals in CT installing medical equipment. Upon retiring he moved to Leesburg, Florida where he spent a lot of time golfing and made many friends. He was a man of faith and a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Leesburg. He moved to Pomfret Center, CT in 2021 with his son {Michael} and daughter in law {Pauline}. Earl enjoyed square dancing, camping, golfing, and spending time with friends and family. He was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, playing cribbage, and was a member of The American Legion. Earl was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years Mary {Ballerini}, his daughter Sheryle {Ballerini}, brothers Arthur West and Richard West and a sister June {Kent}. He leaves his son Wayne West and daughter in law Lynne of Manchester CT, a son Michael West and daughter in law Pauline of Pomfret Center, CT and a daughter Charlene Manseau and son in law Guy of Mooresville N.C. He leaves many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a goddaughter all of whom he loved dearly. He also leaves the family dogs who gave him companionship especially Gracie who was most often in his lap. A memorial service will be held on April 21, 2023 from 10AM to 11:15AM at Holmes Watkins Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Manchester, CT. followed by a graveside service at the VA Cemetery in Middletown, CT held promptly at 12PM.
