John Chipman Obituary

John "Jack" Chipman, 78, of Somers, loving husband of 23 years to Mary Jane (Borgstrom) Chipman, passed away peacefully at Hartford Hospital on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 with his family at his side. Born in Torrington, the son of the late John and Ruana (Carter) Chipman, he grew up in Winsted and lived in Tolland before moving to Somers in 1990. Prior to his retirement in 1992, Jack was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford for 36 years. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 101 in Somers, and he was a long time member of the International Association of Machinist Union. Jack was very proud of his 36 years of sobriety. He loved music, especially the rock n' roll of the 50's, singing, and animals. He enjoyed gardening and flowers. He liked to watch boxing on television, western movies, and taking leisurely walks. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, John Chipman III and his wife Lisa of Coventry, and Julie Parker of Willington; three step children, Susan Machuga of Windsor, Sharon Graham and her husband Eric of FL, and Richard Parker and his wife Megan of NJ; fifteen grandchildren; two brothers, Roland Chipman and his wife Dolly of NJ, and Allen Chipman of Rockville, and several nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by three brothers, Tim, Eddie and Billy Chipman, and a sister, Ruana Chipman. His family will receive friends for calling hours on Monday, August 10, 2015 from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, 551 Talcottville Road (Route 83), Vernon. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Tuesday, August 11th, at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 25 St. Bernard Terrace, Rockville. Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery, Rockville with military honors. Let me start by saying to Jacks family I am sorry for your loss. Jack will hold a place in many peoples lives. To me Jack was my friend, my neighbor, a grandfather and on some occasions felt like my Dad. He guided me on such things as gardening, how to attract deer, and facts about old cars. I watched how Maryanne and Jack were a married couple and I hoped someday my marriage would be as committed and happy, they laughed and joked with each other throughout. I learned lessons from him while he talked about his life, how he explained his troubled childhood. He taught me that if you are a good gardener and you grow tomatoes that they should be red by July 4th.
(Jack and I would have tomato growing competitions ). My hope is that family and friends can now guide Maryjane through this grief and mourning, that she may never feel alone, that she may never have to worry that Jack will be forgotten. To me Jack was many things I am honored to have known him. May you rest in peace Jack.
