John Hooker Obituary

John deMoulpied Hooker died Sunday, May 20, at his home in Canton, Connecticut. Born in 1931, John was the son of Russell O. Hooker and Gertrude "Jo" (Brouard) Hooker. He was raised in West Hartford and graduated from Kingswood School and Trinity College with a degree in economics. After four college summers in the actuarial department at Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, he joined the company's agency department in 1954 and later became assistant vice president of agency operations. Following his retirement in 1989, he was hired by Massachusetts Mutual Financial Services and assisted with the CML/MML merger as director of field administration. He retired for a second time in 1999, after 46 years with the combined companies. A resident of Colebrook for 20 years, he served on the Board of Education for Regional School District 7 from 1983 to 1992 and was Treasurer from 1986 to 1992. He also served on the Colebrook Historic District Commission and was a member of the Colebrook Gin and Chowder Club, the Classic Car Club of America and the Buick Club of America. Never idle, John devoted his time to family and life-long interests in gardening, fishing and antique cars. John leaves his wife, Cynthia (Wickes) Root, as well as three children, Katherine Hooker and her husband Larry Minichiello of Collinsville, Sarah (Hooker) Machowski and her husband Edward Machowski of Norfolk, and John Hooker and his partner Staci Linthacum of Columbia Missouri, and five grandchildren, Elise, Rose and John Minichiello, Alex Machowski, and Susannah Hooker. He is also survived by two sisters, Barbara (Hooker) Thorp and Elise (Hooker) Sirman, and brother-in-law David Sirman, of West Simsbury, and two nephews. John was a 10th generation descendant of Thomas Hooker, founder of Hartford and the inspiration for the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut. All arrangements are private and at the convenience of the family.

My condolences to the Family. My career overlapped John's in the 1970/80's at Connecticut Mutual Life. Our paths crossed many times during that period, & I fondly recall his focus, dedication & good humor. God bless John & those he loved, Sincerely, Jack Gies

I was so very sorry to learn of John's passing. He hired me in 1987 to be an operations consultant at CML. I left the company in 1995 to join MML and was delighted to find myself working with John again when the companies merged. He was a straight-shooter, a man who pulled no punches. He managed firmly but fairly. We continued to be email buds after retirement and I will miss the jokes he passed along. We didn't align politically but respected our differences. I will miss him and send my sincere sympathies to you, the family. Respectfully,Mary Willmuth
