Margaret PINCOMBE Obituary

PINCOMBE, Margaret Fleming Margaret Fleming, age 94, of Simsbury, died November 3 at MacLean in Simsbury with family by her side. Born Margaret Ekins in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1916, Margaret was one of six children of William and Charlotte Ekins. As a young woman, Margaret studied all types of dance and taught tap dancing and ballet. Dance was a life-long passion. She graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in English in 1937. Her first job was teaching school in a one-room schoolhouse in Manitoba, followed by several years of teaching on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Cardston, Alberta. During World War II Margaret held a scientific job in Quebec City in support of the Canadian military. There she met her future husband, Gerald Fleming. After World War II they married and moved to Hartford, CT where Mr. Fleming found employment as an electrician at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. After living in Hartford for several years they moved their growing family to Windsor where Mr. Fleming built a home. After her husband's untimely death from pancreatic cancer in 1962, Margaret began teaching at the Roger Wolcott Elementary School in Windsor, where she remained until her retirement in 1978. She was proud of the many children she taught to read during her career. Despite working and raising her four children as a single mother, she obtained a Master's degree in Education from the University of Hartford. At age 62, Margaret met and married Charles Pincombe and moved to Simsbury where she loved her home and garden on the bank of the Farmington River. In her later years she enjoyed dancing, travel, gardening, and family. She was an active member of the Simsbury Senior Center where she served as program director and sang in the chorus. Her extensive volunteer work included acting and performing as part of the Cameo Club and the Intonations singing group. Margaret spent the last few years of her life at the McLean Healthcare facility in Simsbury. She was predeceased by her first and second husbands and her brothers Donald and William Ekins. She is survived by her children, Wayne Fleming of Hartford, Diane Brainerd of Simsbury, Kevin Fleming of Tolland, and Elaine Fleming Remillard of Hanover, NH and their spouses; her grandchildren and great–grandchildren; as well as her sisters, Evelyn Tucker of San Diego, Marion Jones of Winnepeg, and Gwen Macintosh of Sarasota. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, (November 13, 2010) in the McLean Chapel, 75 Great Pond Road in Simsbury with a reception immediately following in the Koopman Room. Donations in her memory may be made to McLean Healthcare, 75 Great Pond Road, Simsbury, CT 06070. To send notes of condolence and sign the online guestbook, please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.

Without her there would have been no ballet and no dance therapy. Her influence on my life was enormous.I will never forget her.

I saw the obituary for Mrs. Fleming in the paper and just wanted to share my story with her family. I was a 4th grade student of hers in 1970 and having a very difficult time grasping multiplication. Her solution was to have me dropped off at her house on saturday mornings to work with me one on one. We would do our lesson, then she would give me cookies and milk, and turn on the Saturday morning cartoons. She would do a few household chores and then we would go back to work. It was only two Saturdays before I really aced those flashcards and I remember being sad we were done! I have shared this story many times with my own children as an outstanding example of a dedicated teacher. Little did I know how much she was dealing with at the time. What an amazing history she had. Rest assured her legend lives on - My daughter is in her junior year at UHart as an elementary ed. major and Mrs Fleming (for thats what she will always be to me) is the kind teacher she wants to be-Unforgettable. My sympathy to all her family and friends
