Mildred Groves Obituary

MILDRED BROWN GROVES On February 13, 2014, Jesus opened His arms and welcomed another permanent resident to His home. He knows her as Mildred, but we know her as Mother, in the truest sense of this special title. She was born in Richlands, NC on April 29th, 1926. She is survived by three sons, W.C. Groves, Jr. and wife Jane, David Groves, and Stephen Groves and wife Joanna. She also has five grandsons and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Myrtle Brown, sister, Pauline, brother, Travis, husband, Walter Groves Sr. , and son, Billy. Each of us writes his own testimony on this earth, and she wrote hers in a most Godly and nurturing manner. She was a pianist and served faithfully for many years at church. She also traveled with the Gospel Group The Jubilaires and was a charter member of Peace Baptist Church. She and Walter made Christmas and other family events so special with her on the piano and Walter on the harmonica. She cooked an untold number of meals for preachers, evangelists, family and anyone in need of good ole southern hospitality. We will cherish her memory, but we are comforted by the knowledge that she, her parents, sister, brother, Walter and Billy are sharing heaven with Jesus. Thank you, Mother, for your never-ending love, prayers and concern for all of us. Visitation for family and friends will be from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, February 16th at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. At other times the family will be at the home of Glenda Groves, 207 Green Meadows Dr., Wilmington. A service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, February 17th, at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel officiated by her pastor, Rev. Rudy Shepard and her grandson, Rev. Kevin Groves. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Condolences to family at www.andrewsmortuary.com Andrews Mortuary Market Chapel.

There will never be another Aunt Mildred! She was the living embodiment of gentle love. When she smiled or shared that little shy giggle about something, the room lit up and everything seemed right with the world. Her inner joy rang out thru the keys of a piano. In my mind she was always a blend of the very best of my Mama and my Grandma Brown-humble, gentle with just a little mischievousness mixed in for spice. As the odd kid in the family that never fit in anywhere, Aunt Mildred always made me feel loved and welcome. Uncle Walter could get me to smile inspite of myself. I cherish my memories of times I spent playing with Stevie and Little Bill, running around and thru her house, and she would turn from her cooking and smiling gently give us an idea of something neat to do that got us out of the way without leaving us feeling like we were IN the way and unwanted. I wished then, as I do now, that I knew how to tell her that I loved her and her family so much. There is no doubt in my mind that she is now, as she was here on earth, sitting at the feet of Jesus and now she rests in His perfect peace, her burdens at last laid down. I thank God that He blessed me to have had 3 such remarkable women in my life-Grandma Brown, Aunt Mildred and Mama. I am in constant prayer for healing and comfort for my cousins and their families.
