Therese McCarthy Obituary

Therese Joyce McCarthy passed away peacefully on September 1st, 2022, at the age of 89. Therese, known to her close family & friends as "Tree", was born on April 18, 1933, to Mary and Howard Murphy. She was the eldest of their 4 children. Therese attended the St Augustine School in Hartford, CT and then Mount St. Joseph Academy for high school. She was still in touch with several of her childhood friends (the "Grammar School Bunch") until very recently. Therese attended the St Francis Hospital School of Nursing and proudly graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1955. We heard very often about how she was requested to be a scrub nurse as a student, even though she was left-handed. And that as a senior nursing student, she was the night charge nurse on a busy neuro-surgical unit! Things to be very proud of indeed! Therese married William (Bill) McCarthy on June 2, 1956. Bill was truly the love of Therese's life and together they had 6 children: Mary Elizabeth, William Michael, Kenneth John, Ann-Margaret and Judith Ellen. Baby Maureen was born very prematurely between Ann-Margaret and Judith and died just a few moments after birth. Unfortunately, Bill passed away when Therese was only 49, leaving her to raise the 5 of us on her own. We are forever appreciative of her hard work that allowed for all of us to attend excellent colleges and to become educated professionals. The Sacred Heart of Jesus was Therese's "best friend", as she called him. She was a devout Catholic and going to Mass daily & weekly kept her active in her communities-first at St. Francis of Assisi in South Windsor, CT and then at St. Mark in Highlands Ranch, after she relocated to Colorado. She was a Eucharistic Minister and greatly enjoyed bringing Holy Communion to homebound parishioners. Therese was still driving herself to daily Mass at St Mark until just 2 years ago. When she was no longer able to attend daily Mass, she watched it on EWTN, her favorite TV channel. This was a source of great comfort to Tree, and she had it on almost constantly, especially when at her assisted living and long-term care facilities. While we are all grieving the loss of Therese, we are certain that she is having a glorious Heavenly reunion with our dad Bill, her mom & dad, Mary and Howard Murphy and her siblings Joseph, Howard and Patricia, all of whom preceded her in death. Therese leaves 13 grandchildren who adored her and 9 great grandchildren, whom she loved very much. We will miss you, Tree/Gram/Mom (as she used to sign her emails), but you will always be in our hearts. Please join us in celebrating Therese's life at a funeral Mass on November 17, 2022 at 10am at St Francis of Assisi in South Windsor, CT. This service will be followed by laying Therese's remains to rest next to our dad at St Benedict Cemetery, Cottage Grove Road in Broomfield, CT. Therese was a devoted daughter as well thats when I met her when she would go to Saint Mary´s Home to visit...she helped volunteering there when able. I am blessed to know her and her place in heaven is very dear to her mom and dad. Her angel wings were giving on earth so she wore them as she walked through the pearl gates. She will be missed but not forgotten, prayers are with the family.
