Charles "Chuck" Mazurek is a fond friend of mine who I met when we were attending Carrol College.
I never heard him refer to himself as "John". When we met the preferred salutation was Charles. There was a group of us, including Barry Parsons and Bill Sokolich who would often assembled at the "Pub" which had to be the favorite hangout for Carrol Students. We often spent time at my home as Charles was very familar with "Buster" an elderly relative of my father's who lived with us. All of us enjoyed Buster's colorful stories about Cornwall, England, where Buster and my father's grandparents migrated from and settled in Butte. Charles and Bill Sokolich were ushers in my wedding to my wife Brenda in Red Lodge. The remarkable thing was that when we left on our honeymoon, Charles chaperoned us to the top of the Bear Tooth Pass in his green Oldsmobile Cutlass 442. I also joined Chuck's beloved 396th Army Reserve Station Hospital. We fell somewhat out of touch when I left for Law School in Missoula. Charles had told us about the ambitions of his Step- Brother Joe to be a political leader. And sure enough--Joe was in my freshman class at Law School and went on to become Attorney General. I always found Charle's interesting because he had a intriguing and confidential way of describing the political climate in Montana, and his interaction with lawyers throught his work as an insurance adjustor. We came in contact again because my wife's sister and husband live in Clancy and as we passed throught Helena on our way to our cabin on Swan Lake we would often have a chance to meet with "Chuck" as he seemed then to be called. We often sent each other Birthday Greeting because we are of the same age with Chuck being one day older than me. It was a wonderful event to attend his Memorial Service and to meet Skoog, Ryan, Mike and families, and have Chuck buy us one more drink. Charles or Chuck, is and will be sorely missed.
