Dr. Horacio Aguirre

1925 - 2017

AGUIRRE, DR. HORACIO, age 92, passed away in his home on September 8, 2017 after a brief illness. Born in New Orleans in 1925 of Nicaraguan parents, Dr. Aguirre was raised in Leon, Nicaragua and then in Managua where he launched his military and professional career. He met Helen Craigie Mayorga in Managua and they married in 1949. After living in Panama, he moved his young family to Miami Shores, FL in 1953. Dr. Aguirre was the founder of Diario Las Americas with his brother Dr. Francisco Aguirre. Diario Las Americas was the first Spanish-language daily newspaper in the Southeastern United States beginning in 1953 where Dr. Aguirre was editor until he retired in 2012. He had a passion for democratic ideals and freedom of the written and spoken word. He demonstrated that zeal through his professional and civic work in international, national and local institutions. He pursued his love of literature, the arts and the preservation of Hispanic culture as a patron of many organizations that enjoyed his dedicated support for decades. Dr. Aguirre had a deep love for his native country, Nicaragua, his adopted country, the United States of America, and the country that spoke to his heart, Spain. His family is very proud of his achievements and will strive to honor his memory in every way. Mostly, they will remember him in his role as father, grandfather and great-grandfather in which he was both a gentleman and a gentle man. Dr. Aguirre is survived by his children Horacio Stuart (Lynn Summers), Carmen Mar¡a, Helen Aguirre Ferr‚ (Jos‚ Luis Ferr‚), Alejandro Jos‚ (Mar¡a Cruell Aguirre) and Marta Aguirre Bascom (Thomas Bascom); 14 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. He was predeceased by his wife Helen Craigie Aguirre and son Carlos Aguirre Craigie. Visitation will take place Sunday, September 24th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at CABALLERO RIVERO LITTLE HAVANA, 3344 S.W. 8th St., Miami. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, September 25th at 11:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 415 N.E. 105th St., Miami Shores. Burial will take place at Woodlawn North Cemetery, 3260 S.W. 8th St., Miami, following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Dr. Aguirre's memory to La Liga Contra el Cancer, 2180 S.W.12 Ave., Miami, FL 33129.
