Jean Martin Obituary

MARTIN, JEAN FILSTEIN, of Sunny Isles Beach, a philanthropist for Jewish causes locally, nationally and internationally, died Saturday May 24, 2008, of complications following a stroke. Mrs. Martin, the daughter of the late Abe and Becky Filstein, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She moved to Miami Beach where she met and married Albert Martin. They were married for 23 years until Mr. Martin died in 1991. Mrs. Martin began her philanthropic ventures by donating a fully equipped ambulance to Mogen David Adom, the Israeli Red Cross. More recently she donated for a building at Yemin Orde, a youth village in Israel that is home to over five hundred immigrant, disadvantaged and at-risk teenagers from around the world, and to the Jewish National Fund for another building in Israel. Mrs. Martin's philanthropy also extended to South Florida and the Northeast. She donated the school building and a van for the Filstein- Martin Torah Academy in Ft. Lauderdale. She donated to Jewish Children and Family Services of Philadelphia to sponsor a van and financial aid for Holocaust survivors. In addition, Mrs. Martin provided scholarship funds for the Pearlman Jewish Day School in Philadelphia, so that needy Jewish children could attend. Mrs. Martin is survived her sister Edith Filstein, her niece Karen Lichtenstein, her nephews, Dr. Marc Filstein and Dr. Allen Filstein, and seven great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Simon Filstein. Funeral services will be held at noon, Wednesday May 28, 2008, at Lakeside Memorial Park, 10301 NW 25th Street, Doral, FL, phone no. Jean was a wonderful human being who truly cared about others less fortunate than herself. She was committed to the State of Israel, Jewish education, and to the entire world Jewish community. She was an inspiration to us all. May her memory be for an everlasting blessing.
