Walter Troutman Obituary

TROUTMAN, JR., WALTER CARL, of Miami, Florida, passed away on September 2, 2005, after a long illness. He was a native of Tennille, Georgia, born on November 26, 1913, the eldest son of Dr. Walter Carl and Georgia Hughes Troutman. Walter attended the Georgia Military College and was a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he was a football letterman. Upon graduation Walter worked for the Coca Cola Company. After serving as a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, he then began a long and successful business career as a real estate developer. He held various properties in California, New York, Florida, Jamaica, and his native Georgia. Perhaps his most notable real estate development was The Jockey Club, a premier destination of Hollywood stars, politicians, business tycoons, and high profile athletes visiting the Miami area during the seventies and eighties. Known by many and friend to all, Walter was a generous benefactor to the University of Georgia, and the Georgia Military College. Walter was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack Hughes Troutman. He is survived by his nephew, Marc W. Troutman of Atlanta, Georgia; his nieces: Jac'lyn Troutman Willie of Franklin, Tennessee, Anne Troutman Brown (Julian), and Beth Troutman Williams (Hank) of Atlanta, Georgia; six great-nieces, nephews and cousins, Mrs. Buel Odel of Macon, Georgia, Martha Stephens Wheeler of Tallahassee, Florida, Mary Stephens Crosby of Simpsonville, South Carolina, and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Jack Hughes Troutman of Atlanta. Graveside services will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, September 5, 2005, in Zeta Cemetery, Tennille, Georgia, with Reverend William C. Moody officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Walter C. Troutman, Jr. Memorial Fund, c/o National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Avenue, Miami, Florida 33136-1494. May and Smith Funeral Directors, 1119 Riddleville Road, Sandersville, Georgia, is in charge of these arrangements. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.herald.com/obituaries.

Walter taught me how to live life

to the fullest and his positive attitude will live on...

And if I go while you're still here...

Know that I live on,

Vibrating to a different measure

-behind a thin veil you cannot see through

You will not see me, so you must have faith.

Wait for the time we can soar together again,

-both aware of each other.

Until then, live life to its fullest

And when you need me,

Just whisper my name in your heart,

-I will be there.

I met Walter in 1967 when he started the Jockey Club. I was the CPA for the Club and for Walter from time to time. I want to extend my sincere condolences to the family. Please let me know if there will be a memorial service in Miami?

Peace to my 'Uncle Walter' whom I loved dearly and who taught me his unique professional expertise in the private world of pleasure club business. He was indeed the center of my 'Winners Circle' that I published for him and his Jockey Club's International for almost 2 decades. We were each others champions who loved the club business and through such shared a longtime and wonderful friendship that went through our many ups and downs together. You are now in the greatest promotion of all time, Heaven, as you went to church every single Sunday that I remember and I am thankful that I was able to know a side of you that not too many people knew and that must have be

en because I too was from...Georgia.
