Everett Edson Miller
Everett Edson "Ev" Miller of Everett, WA died on October 15, 2004.
Ev was born in Chicago, IL on July 29, 1917. He grew up in Minneapolis, MN, excelling as a student, athlete and musician. He earned a B.S. degree in Education at the University of Minnesota and began teaching in the Minneapolis Public Schools in 1939. From 1941 to 1945 he was in the U.S. Navy, serving most of his time as a recruit trainer at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. On June 19, 1942, he married Dorothy E. Robarge of Rice Lake, WI. In 1946 he began his long career with the YMCA as the assistant physical director of the downtown branch of the Minneapolis YMCA. He quickly advanced into administration and moved to Minot, ND, in 1956 where he was the executive director. Ev came to Everett, WA in 1962 with his wife Dorothy and their children David and Vicki. Until his retirement in 1982, he served as the executive director of the Everett YMCA. Following retirement, he was interim YMCA director in Great Falls, MT and Everett.
Deeply devoted to family, church, vocation and community, Ev was a natural leader in all his pursuits. He was a long-time member and a lay leader in the First United Methodist Church of Everett. He was a president of the Snohomish County Council of Churches. Highly respected in the YMCA organization, he served in various leadership roles, including four terms on the National YMCA Council. In the community he participated on countless boards and committees. He chaired the City of Everett Park Commission and the Board of Adjustment. In 1968 he founded and chaired the Drug Abuse Council, which later presented him with the Edna Davert Memorial Award for "profound dedication to human service." He was a 42 year member of the Everett Rotary Club, past president of the Minot, ND Rotary and for many years, a singer in the Everett Gospel Mission Men's Chorus.
Ev is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy of Marysville, WA; daughter Vicki Lynn Maxey and grandson Scott Maxey of Arlington, WA; son David E. "Win" Miller (Elena) and granddaughter Lisa Tukan of Mukilteo, WA; Barrie Maxey, who was like a son to him; Janice Miller, who was like a daughter; brother-in-law John Robarge of Topeka, KS; five great granddaughters; and cousins in Ohio, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his sister, June Kennell.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, November 19th, at the First United Methodist Church, 3530 Colby Avenue, Everett, WA.
