Floyd Schlameus Obituary

Floyd Schlameus
1921-2009

Born in Fischer Store, TX to Cora Guenther and Harry Schlameus on December 21, 1921, Floyd met his wife Ferne Jensen Schlameus at the Hollywood Palladium ballroom. He asked her to dance because she was "the prettiest girl in the room."" Floyd and Ferne were married on August 5, 1945 in The Wee Kirk O' The Heather Chapel, Forest Lawn, in Glendale, CA.
Spending most of his youth in Texas, Floyd graduated from college at age 20 and went on to get his master's in education. Floyd, a proud Marine, spent four years in active duty, mostly in the South Pacific. Floyd and Ferne then moved to Montana where Floyd spent more than 35 years as an educator, athletic trainer and guidance counselor. They welcomed their only child, Jeff, in 1949. Floyd and Ferne moved to Edmonds, Washington in 1981 to be close to their son, daughter-in-law, Jan, and only two grandchildren, Brett and Brooke.
Floyd and Ferne traveled the world and played an active role in their church. Floyd enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with Jeff, and telling countless stories and jokes. He was always looking for something to fix around the house and was known as "Papa" to family and far beyond.
Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Ferne; and his son, Jeff.
Floyd is survived by his daughter-in-law, Jan; grandson, Brett (Ali) and granddaughter, Brooke.
Floyd died peacefully on May 13, 2009.
A celebration of Floyd's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Thursday, May 21, at Edmonds Lutheran Church, 23525 84th Avenue W, Edmonds.

I don't know how I would have made it through High School without Mr. Schlameus. I was on the wrestling team and spent 3 years with Mr Schlameus as my mentor and counsellor. He will always be remembered as a vital member of the Bison Family. We were even pleased to have Floyd join my father, brothers and I on fishing trips occasionally.

Lost touch with Floyd over the last 30 years. However, I never have or will forget him. My heart hurts today. Thank you for sharing him with the Bison world.

Dear Jan, Brett, Ali, and Brooke,
Papa was such an incredible man and a marvelous example of the perfect Grandparent. He loved you all so much and was so proud of each of you. We have so many memories of Papa on the sidelines (with Jeff of course) of the Meadowdale Football games, in the bleachers for basketball or softball cheering for all of the kids, at 4th of July picnics, and many other events. Although family was the most important thing to him, he always treated my girls as if they were part of his family too. He was truly "Papa" to both of them as well to countless others of Brett and Brooke's friends. Whenever I would see him, he'd always ask "How's my girl" wanting to know how Steph was. He cheered just as hard for all of the kids in the various sports as he did his own grandchildren. He always had gentle words of wisdom and a story to tell. He was a gracious man with an enormous heart and we all loved him dearly and will miss him greatly.
