Wesley "Jim" James Hammer
Wesley "Jim" James Hammer, 81, passed away September 30, 2008 in Arlington, WA. He was born on January 17, 1927 to George and Mildred Hammer in Toledo, OR. In 1941 the family moved to Arlington where Jim attended and graduated from Arlington High School.
Jim served in the Merchant Marines until injured during combat. He was a convert to Catholicism and married his high school sweetheart, Darleen Hurlbert. He was a member of St. Cecilia's in Stanwood, WA and past member of Immaculate Conception in Arlington. Early in his lumber industry career, Jim built his first lumber mill.
Jim never met a stranger. All who knew him knew he loved to tell stories, and his love of people caused him to show a genuine interest in his listener. Jim was quick to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Eating good foods was another one of his pleasures and you could count on him to share a new found treat. He had been a member of various groups such as the Elks, Moose, the Everett Golf and Country Club, and for a time served as President of the North Cascade Chapter of the International order of the Hoo—Hoos.
After moving to Camano Island in the mid 70s, Jim enjoyed taking friends and family out on his boat to do a little fishing, claming, and crabbing. Every fall he looked forward to a season of bird hunting with life long friends.
Preceding Jim in death were his twin infant great-grandsons.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Darleen, of Arlington; son, Steve (Marty), of Arlington; daughter, Kathleen (Ben) Whitson, of Arlington; sister, Shirley Monteith, of Stanwood. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Stephen, Melissa (Kevin) Rork, Jason (Emmy), John (Ali), Joe (Allison) Larson, Jennifer (Jon), and Christopher (Sarah); seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
