Mark D. Brakla was born on Jan. 5, 1953, in Benton Harbor to Donald Brakla and Leona (Glaske) Brakla.
He went to be with his Lord on Nov. 9, 2021, in Grand Rapids, Mich.
In his early years, Mark attended Berrien Springs schools, but at age 14, he left home and school and went off on his own. The next 20 years were plagued with drug and alcohol addictions, health problems and part-time jobs. Somewhere along the way, be obtained his GED and found employment with Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids.
It was about that time – when he was in his middle 30s – that Mark found peace in the Lord: forgiveness, restoration and a chance to begin again. After much counseling, and an end to his addictions, he was able to help many who were traveling that same down-hill path which he had taken for so many years – to find salvation, peace with God, and a purpose for their lives. All by the grace of God!
Mark retired after 32 years with Spectrum Health, advancing from maintenance to IT specialist. After retirement, he devoted much of his time to his church, in media, music, or wherever he was needed.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife, Pat, to whom he was married for 28 years, as well as their combined families, sons: Dan Brakla and Shawn (Ashley) Patterson; daughters: Nikki Brakla, Cassie Johnson, and Mandy (Tom) Klocko; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his mother, Lee Brakla, and sister, Shari Payne, both of St. Joseph.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Brakla; and daughter, Kathy Patterson.
A celebration of life service was held on Nov. 15, at New Community Church in Grand Rapids.
Memorials may be made to: Community Recovery International, New Community Church WM, 2340 Dean Lake Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49505.

Leona and family, So sorry to read of your loss. ( You probably don't remember me. I was the last child born to Ernest and Emma Glaske. Ernest was your fathers' brother.) Know that my thoughts and prayers are with you.
