Jane Lloyd Obituary

Jane Lloyd
June 5, 1931 - February 10, 2023
Durham, North Carolina - Jane Marie Lloyd, age 91, a resident of The Forest at Duke, died February 10, 2023. Born on June 5, 1931 in Raleigh, she was the daughter of the late Alfonso Lloyd, Attorney at Law and Ruth Elisabeth Royster Lloyd, homemaker and legal secretary to her husband.
Jane received her BS degree from the University of Mary Washington in 1953 and her Master of Arts degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. After attending post-graduate classes at the University of Southern California on the Wellesley Campus, and at UNC- Greensboro,
her teaching career began in 1953 at Griar School for Girls in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. She then taught at Thompson Junior High in Statesville, NC and St. Mary's Junior College.
In 1961 she was hired at Duke University on a one year appointment and she retired from Duke in 1993, 32 years later, as Associate Professor in Health, Physical Education and Athletics.
In her teaching career she taught 14 different activity sports classes, various Health courses and served as a club advisor.
Jane was the founder and first coach of the first Duke Women's Golf Team, Chairman of Golf in the NCAIAW (now the NCAA), and helped start the "Big Four" competition in the 1970's with Wake Forest University, UNC-CH, Appalachian State and Duke.
After retiring from coaching the golf team, she continued to be active in the Duke Sports Club Program which consisted of 32 clubs run by students.
Her sabbaticals consisted of visits to Vanderbilt, Princeton, West Chester State, Harvard, Yale and MIT to learn how to advance Duke's program.
Jane was an avid golfer competing every summer in tournaments. She was a member of the NC Golf Association, and the Carolinas Golf Association of which she also was an officer, played match play tournaments on the NC and SC teams and participated in the Trans-National and US Senior Women's at Pine Needles. At one point she had a 2 handicap and was proud of her six hole-in-ones as well as the honor bestowed upon her by Duke of a lifetime membership to the Duke Golf Course at her retirement.
She also enjoyed leather-craft, wood carving, painting, bird watching, needlepoint, reading, gardening, and especially her dogs, mainly dachshunds.

I had the honor of knowing Jane the last several years of her life, while working as a member on staff at the Forest at Duke. I admired how she treated all those she encountered with enthusiastic kindness & respect, but most importantly how she made friends of all those around her. Jane was the kind of person you looked forward to seeing. Despite having such an interesting & fascinating life of her own, she was always the type to ask about you instead of talk about herself. She was an avid listener, who enjoyed hearing about the big & small things in your day. She was wise, yet youthful at heart. We often laughed about how two individuals with a 65+ year age difference could become such dearly close friends, with plenty to always talk about. Although I will miss her witty sense of humor, smile, and her great advice, I will always cherish the memories of our friendship.

I agree with everything Andrea said! Coach Lloyd had confidence in us. She coached, she cajoled, she laughed, she sympathized.

Coach Lloyd was the catalyst to starting the women´s golf team at Duke. After the arrival of Rod Meyer, Duke entered the era of Title IX and Coach Lloyd stepped up to lead our team. What we lacked In talent (no recruits) we made up in enthusiasm. Our team could only schedule away events when the Men´s van was available...Coach Lloyd was so encouraging and supportive-I have a picture she gave me of that first group with her. We were nothing important, but Coach Lloyd arranged lots of matches and we even went to a tournament at Furman. We managed to survive on $8 meals a day for the one overnight event. Jan Disque was our youngest the first year, and Jane supported her recognition as a female athlete at her graduation. Thanks Jane! You did good .
