Durham, North Carolina - John "Jay" Edward Hooker, ll passed away on April 26, 2021 in Durham, NC with his beloved dog , Zyla, right by his side. He was born in Martinsville, VA on January 14, 1963 to Patricia Poythress Hooker and John Edward Hooker. Jay was raised there and cultivated many life long friendships. He grew up playing golf with his father, Johnny, who encouraged his passion for the game. In 1982, he moved to Chapel Hill, NC and went on to study at N.C State his freshman year, then transferred to UNC, Chapel Hill. Jay was a big Tarheel fan, it was in his blood, because Rameses was named after his great uncle Jack "The Battering Ram" Merritt.
He enjoyed attending Tarheel games with his stepfather, Dan Uzzle Jr ,his mother Patsy Uzzle and his many friends. Jay was retired and most recently worked as a mortgage broker. He moved to Durham, NC in 2000 where one of his greatest pleasures was playing golf with his buddies at Hope Valley Country Club. Jay lovingly cared for his mother, Patsy, in the last years of her life.
Jay was a joyful soul and will be especially remembered for his engaging smile and captivating laugh. He had many lifelong friends, with whom he shared his great love of music, and was in touch with them until his death. Jay was very close to his sister, Martee, brother in law, Doug, and his nephews Douglas and Dane were the light of his life. The family wishes to thank our good friend ,George Lewis, who helped Jay in his time of need. We are grateful Jay is now at peace and WE ALL "Love ya Darlin'!
Jay was preceded in death by his parents John Edward Hooker, Patricia Poythress Uzzle ,his stepfather, Dalma Wilson Uzzle Jr., and his step sister Mary Martha Uzzle. He is survived by his sister Merritt "Martee" Hooker Seuss (Doug), nephews Douglas Hooker Seuss, and Dane Wilson Seuss and stepbrother, Dalma Wilson Uzzle lll.
A Celebration of Life Ceremony will take place with his immediate family in Grass Valley, CA.
