Windgassen, Richard Joseph 'Dick'
Apr. 6, 1933 - Oct. 19, 2015
Dick, born to Richard and Marie Windgassen in Pittsburgh, PA, graduated from Hampton High School in 1951. He earned a BS degree in Chemistry in 1955 from Carnegie Mellon and a PhD in organic chemistry from University of Rochester in 1958.
Dick worked 9 years at Shell Oil in California. In 1968, he joined Amoco Research Center in Whiting, IN where he met his wife Mildred (née Crncich). They had a child James (Jim) in 1972 and moved to Wheaton, IL in 1974. Richard and Mildred moved to Venice, FL in 1995.
Dick's passion was science, in particular chemistry, and saw the world through eyes that were enchanted by how the universe worked. Dick was granted 10 US patents, 2 of them during his years in Venice.
Dick's friend Janet described him as one of the kindest and most human people she knew. To his child Jim, he was the greatest mentor one could ask for.
Dick was active in the Venice Taxpayers League, Great Books Club, was an avid Bridge player, and member of Epiphany Cathedral.
Dick is survived by his child Jim and his spouse Melinda, his grandchild Amelia, and several nieces and nephews.
Services: Epiphany Cathedral, 350 W. Tampa Ave. Venice, FL 1:30pm Saturday December 19th.
