Stephanie Keeler Obituary

After seven months of struggling with complications following heart surgery, Stephanie Plant Keeler, "Penny" to all who knew and loved her, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2012, at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was 66.
Penny was born in Logan, Utah, on June 15, 1945, to Ross H. and Favell Roskelley Plant and grew up in Richmond. She graduated from North Cache High School with high honors, graduated magna cum laude from Utah State University with a bachelor's in English, and was the valedictorian of the College of Humanities and Arts. She was awarded one of 10 national Phi Kappa Phi graduate scholarships, subsequently earning her master's degree at the University of Arizona.
Penny married Paul Douglas Keeler on March 28, 1975, in the Logan LDS Temple. She and Doug had three daughters.
Penny had a great love of English and reading that she lovingly shared with her daughters and with the many students she taught for more than 30 years at Millcreek and Centerville junior high schools.
We are eternally grateful for her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ that she shared in both word and deed. Penny had many health challenges throughout her life, but fought through them with amazing faith and endurance.
She brilliantly passed her final test, and has joined her father, Ross; her brother, Stephen; and many loved ones who passed on before her. She is survived by her husband, Doug; daughters, Melissa (Justin) West, Robyn (Bret) Parsons and Kristin (JT) Clark; eight grandchildren; mother, Favell; sisters Patty (Duane) Loveless and Peg (Michael) Ivanyo.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at St. Mark's Hospital and Woodland Park Rehabilitation Center for their respectful and compassionate care of Penny, as well as extended family, friends and neighbors who have shown such concern and love for her.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at the LDS church building at 1450 S. 350 West in Bountiful. Viewings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main St. in Bountiful, and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the church. Interment will be in the Bountiful City Cemetery.

Doug, you don't know me by face, but Penny and I were roommates at USU and she lived one summer with my family in Denver. I appreciate finding the obit in the USU Alumni Magazing. I'm sorry not to have known about her struggles and passing. Penny was my best friend for many years, and I love and admire all her talents and abilities. One of my security questions is "who was your favorite roommate" - and the answer is "Penny". I'm sorry not to have been in better touch through the last years. We live in Denver, but always saw you in the Tab Choir (on TV) until your retirement. My heart is sad to know she is gone. My deepest condolences to you and your daughters.

Dear Doug, I am so sorry I didn't make it to the funeral. I didn't even know Penny had been sick. How do BFF's like Penny and I lose touch so quickly. Our lives get going in different directions. My memories of Penny go from our six week bicycle trip with Marian in England, to the birth of each of your precious little girls. Doug, my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. Our knowledge of the Gospel and the Atonement make loss of those we love most just a tiny bit easier, but there is nothing that will fill the hole in your heart. I found that when my mother died. It gets easier, but the emptiness is always there. Think beautiful thoughts and find Penny in the faces of your girls and your grandchildren. All my love, Suze

I taught with Penny at Centerville Jr. High. She was a special friend and a great teacher. May you find peace and comfort in the coming days. I will always cherish the time I spent with her. She was truly an example to many.

I am so sorry to hear of Penny's passing. She (along with her family) were such a positive part of my childhood and as I grew up and moved on to get married and settle down in Oregon I have thought of her and her family often. The love she and her family gave me will never be forgotten. Love, Aimee (Pyles) Driskill

I am so sorry for the loss of your wife, mother, daughter, and sister. Penny was a dear friend to so many people. She will always be so to me. May the sting of this moment be tempered with the joyous memories you created with her. She touched my life more ways than I can express.

SORRY to hear of your loss. I enjoyed the spelling bees she helped pronounce at Centerville. Sounds like she was great at many things. Every year I am more in awe of those who teach and bless lives.

I grew up with Penny's daughters, one of them being a best friend. Penny was a wonderful mom to her daughters, she was a great neighbourhood mom to me. Later Penny and Doug became my grandpa's visiting teachers. My grandpa loved the Keelers coming over to talk to him, and it brought him a lot of joy to see Penny. My mom had Penny as a teacher at Millcreek and enjoyed her class very much. My mom enjoyed her friendship more all the years after class ended. Penny was a great friend, neighbour, teacher, and borrowed mom. I will miss Penny so very much. My family will miss her very much.

My daughters and Penny's daughters were about the same ages and we lived just three houses away so they were all very good friends growing up. Everyone knows how important it is for your children to have the "right" friends. I will always remember Penny walking the dog around the block and always having a sweet smile and some good conversation as we passed each other. Its the little things that you remember huh?

I was a childhood friend to one of Penny's daughters and even though I haven't seen the family for many years they have never left my memory and I remember Penny to be very soft spoken and welcoming. She was a very nice lady. My sympathy goes out to her family.

Keeler, Plant Families, thank you for sharing your beautiful Penny with many many grateful people. I am one of Mrs. Keeler's former students. I enjoyed her as a teacher and friend. May you be blessed with peace, knowing she is now free from illness. Mrs. Keeler, thank you for enriching my life. God Bless.
