Arthur Wachter, age 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Houston, Texas, on Friday, December 30, 2022, in the loving company of family. Arthur was born on June 22, 1928, to his father, Isidore Yitzchak Wachter, and his mother, Evelyn Topitz, in Brooklyn, New York, then moved to Lakewood, NJ, at age 9. In high school, he played football, golf, and the clarinet. From 1946-1948, Arthur served as an Army medic in the Korean War.
Arthur returned to New York City in 1948, attending the Jean Morgan School of Art and the School of Visual Arts. He began his career as a graphic artist at Curtiss-Wright, then as Art Director for AMF. On weekends, Arthur worked for Sandra Greer Real Estate. He met his love, Lois, in the spring of 1972, and they were married in 1976. They lived in New York before moving to Houston, TX, in 1982.
Arthur was the gentlest of men, always humble, kind, courageous, curious, and a devoted family man. A real mensch! He was a talented painter, figure skater, animal lover, music lover, ballroom dancer, and he could fix anything. Arthur and Lois dedicated their lives together, creating opportunities for musical artists through SOMA International Foundation, which they founded in 1978. They enjoyed theatre and traveling to ports in the Caribbean, Europe, and the United States.
Arthur was the husband of his beloved wife of forty-five years, Lois Alba Wachter. He was the father of Jeri (William) Wachter of Gilbertsville, NY; grandfather of Aidan Arthur Woishnis of Albany, NY; brother of Howard (Andrea) Wachter, of Queens, New York, and Sheila (Arthur) Polsky of Miami, FL; and uncle of nieces and nephews across the U.S. He was the stepfather of Debi (Brian) Carlisle of Fredericksburg, TX, Jeffrey (Catherine)Townsend, and Shelley (Robert) Townsend, of Houston, TX; step-grandfather of Lauren (Justin) Bennett and Giorgio Villani, of Houston, TX.
A celebration of life service for Arthur will be held Friday, January 6, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079 with a reception to immediately follow in the Magnolia Venue of Memorial Oaks.
