Bill Young Obituary

Bill E. Young passed away on May 31, 2014, after a lifelong battle with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. Bill led a very productive and active life despite the disease. He was a radio and television legend who charged headlong into every project with an energy and passion that was unmatched.
Bill was born in Honey Grove, Texas, on November 29, 1939, and is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Sharon; two sons, Eric E. Young and his wife Sarah, and William Scott Young; two granddaughters, Taylor Sueann Young and Haley Fay Young, and their mother Stacy Young; one sister, Judy Pippin; two nephews, Randy and Ron Pippin; one niece, Jennifer Augustus; and two godsons, Stephen and Curtis Harwood. Bill was predeceased by his mother and father, Maurine and William Young, and his brother-in-law, Bob Pippin.
Bill Young began his career while in Hudson High School near Lufkin, Texas, starting at KRBA and, after a week of being on the air, was recruited to work nights at the "big" station in Lufkin, KTRE-AM/TV. Planning on entering the ministry, Bill attended Baylor and worked as the evening DJ at WACO in Waco. It was there that he eventually became the station's Program Director and discovered a real passion for "creative production." Bill left Texas briefly for a stint as morning personality at Star Station's KOIL in Omaha. He returned to program KDOK in Tyler, building the small daytimer into a nationally recognized "school" for such personalities as Steve Lundy, Jimmy Rabbit, Randy Robins, and others. In early 1966, he was hired as the head of programming at Gordon McLendon's KILT-AM & FM in Houston where he served for 15 years. Bill was a true visionary and created the Hudson and Harrigan team while he was at KILT.
In a radio career that spanned almost three decades, Bill worked at only five radio stations, building an illustrious career that included his selection as "National Program Director of the Year" in the Gavin Poll and recognition on five different occasions as one of the industry's top major-market programmers by Billboard Magazine. In 2002, Bill became an original inductee into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.
Bill Young founded Bill Young Productions in 1981 which grew to become one of the leading radio, television and print production/post production services in the nation...producing over 50,000 completed commercials a year. A Bill Young Productions commercial airs somewhere in the world every 22 seconds and his legendary voice was heard nationwide.
Bill's early radio training under such media pioneers as Gordon McLendon taught him the art of the "theater of the mind." It was this "visuality" that allowed an easy transition into film and television programming. He is highly regarded as a Director of over 100 music videos, having created projects for George Strait, Clay Walker, Clint Black, Billy Dean, and many others. He directed projects with both "non-professional" talent and such renowned actors as Elliot Gould, Janine Turner, Michael Crawford, and Mariette Hartley. Bill directed commercials for Chevy Trucks, Wrangler, Exxon, Randalls/Tom Thumb Supermarkets, GMC, Buick, Six Flags Theme Parks, and numerous Broadway shows including Saturday Night Fever and West Side Story. Bill was the Associate Producer of Jekyll & Hyde on Broadway. He also headed the team that handled advertising for Randalls/Tom Thumb Supermarkets. He directed the first concert ever filmed in HD when he shot the George Strait Festival at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. He was the voice of KTRK News in Houston, introducing the news team of Dave Ward, Bob Allen, and Marvin Zindler every night for over a decade. Nationally, rock fans are sure to remember him from his introductions of ABC's "In-Concert," the weekly best of concert television show.
Bill thrived on new challenges. He co-produced "Mary Lou's Flip Flop Shop", a children's television series starring Olympian Mary Lou Retton that aired nationally on PBS. In 1996, Bill sold the majority of his company to a group that included key employees. He remained very active in many of his company's projects, and enjoyed being a consultant to various organizations. Bill loved to quail hunt on his family's South Texas ranch, and he enjoyed running dogs, and trained field champion Brittany Spaniels. Bill also was an avid fisherman. He loved to fish any fresh water he found and knew East Matagorda Bay like the back of his hand. Bill wrote and published his memoir, "Dead Air: The Rise and Demise of Music Radio," in 2011. He also served on the "Go Texan" board of the Texas Department of Agriculture and was a Texas A&M certified Master Gardener.
A memorial service for Bill Young will be held at Second Baptist Church in Houston at 6400 Woodway on Saturday, the 7th of June, at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Alpha-1 Foundation at www.alpha-1foundation.org or to the charity of your choice. Tributes may be left on the website of the Settegast-Kopf Funeral Home at Sugar Creek.

From East Texas and the Hudson/Lufkin, Texas area, Bill made a mark in local radio and then nationally via KILT AM/FM. Bill gave me great training & an opportunity to work in Radio - Now 49 years and counting... He led me to become the best radio personality I could be, because of his influence. God Bless!

June 27, 2015

Sharon, Scott and Eric, I'm adding a thought if I may,in the summer of 2015...twice recently, after receiving some accolades, I mentioned publicly Bill as my inspiration, my encourager, example and cheerleader and as time has passed, I think of him so often and miss him now, more than ever. And I can only imagine the emptiness you must feel as well. I can only be thankful to have had the opportunity to know him, work for him, and appreciate the opportunities over and over to do for others the kind of things he did for me. The business needed Bill Young then, and it needs his influence now. I just hope all his students can continue to honor his past by bringing his memory into the present. Keeping his picture in my office, it's like he's here ready to talk to me. And how I wish it were so.
Warm wonderful memories of him and kind thoughts to you.
John Young, Brentwood TN, and a KILT alumni from the 70s.

Sharon, Scott, Eric, and all Bill's family, The Memorial service at Second Baptist was very touching and fitting. I was privileged to work with Bill in the Music Business since the 1960's. I have so many wonderful memories and will always treasure them. I was contacted by a Major Record company to promote a record called "Dead Skunk In The Middle of the Road." I told them I could not see myself going in and asking Bill to play a record about a dead skunk. I said I will pass but they insisted saying if we get something going with the record will you re-consider. I agreed. They did get some action on the record so I took it to Bill and he played it. It was one of hundreds Bill played for me. He immediately added a record for me called "You Light Up My Life," which sold millions. Bill had one of the best ears in Radio. More than that, though, I enjoyed his friendship and many fishing trips together. We used to build our own fishing rods in his home and then try them out "bass fishing," at most area lakes, in Bills boat. He was a man of Christian principles and character first and a Radio and Media giant second. Most of all I will remember Bill as my friend.

I attended The "Celebration of Life for Bill Young" yesterday. Sharon, Eric and Scott, my family will continue to pray for you and your loss.
Bill was very instrumental in my successful radio career. He help to jump start my successful climb and now 43 years later I'm the Pres. & GM of a station near Hudson where Bill grew up. I often think of something he would say that keeps me on track. Like, "Always do what's right and you'll never be wrong." My son-in-law works at Bill Young productions in Houston... So he's still affecting my life.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of my old friend Bill Young. He was the one of the classiest and most talented men I've ever known in this music business that I have been in for over 50 years. He made an impression on everyone who ever met him and had the respect of us all . He could hear a song and KNOW if it was going to be a hit. He helped make the careers of many recording artists by being the first one to play their song and make it a hit. Bill was a trailblazer! The whole radio industry would watch KILT and Bill to see what was going to be successful.
RIP my fine friend... You were one of a kind!!!

Bill, I'm reading your book. Wish I could pick up the phone to discuss it with you. I, too, listened to John R on WLAC when I was a kid. You were a brilliant talent and incredible businessman. Houston and the World was lucky to have you.

I had the privilege of being Bills caregiver and friend for the past three months. I will never forget the way Bills face would light up when Sharon came into his view - he made it known how much he loved and respected her. I reminded Bill every day how much he was loved by everyone he knew and when I would tell him how much God lloved him and that He was always there with him - he would say - I know that. Bill was kind , sweet, appreciative, loved being in front of the camera. I have so many pictures of him and videos - Bill loved listening to.music .Bill had a beautiful smile and warm heart. I've been told I should of known him before he became ill. Those three months were all I needed to know what a wonderful man he was. I read his book to him and learned alot about him that way. He loved his two sons- Scott and Eric so much and regretted the fact he put his work before his family. Bill , I would tell him - most successful men do regret that - you were a legend in the music industry and its hard to do what you did and be there for your family too but you did the best you could- dont have regrets - let them know now how much they mean to you and he did. What an honor to know Bill Young - I will miss him alot and love him forever.

If we're fortunate in life, we all meet someone along the way like Bill Young.

Bill was by far the best teacher I ever had in my career. His innate ability to spot talent, whether in front of the mic or behind the board, was unmatched and he would work with you to hone it to a razor sharp edge. He made everyone better by expecting the best and led by example by being the best. Whether I was building a track or producing an agency spot, Bill's influence permeated my sound and has stayed with me for nearly 30 years

Even after I left BYP, he always found the time to talk, encourage and offer his unique insights on how to make something sound even better. On hearing the news Monday, I reviewed some of the emails we shared these past few years. We traded audio files and I anxiously awaited his comments. Always the teacher Bill constructively wrote, “ Only suggestion is to 'learn the power of a pause'. Doesn't have to be a big one, it's the placement that matters most. Done well, it speaks very loud!"

I consider myself one of the lucky ones. Bill was my mentor, my tutor but most importantly, he was my friend. He will surely be missed

Sharon, Scott, Eric and the Young family my thoughts and prayers are with you.

It was May 1970 and I was a 21-year-old junior at Rice working at the campus radio station. I called Bill and told him that our station would be thrilled if he would come talk to us about radio. Bill graciously agreed to do so. The standing room only classroom listened to Bill's every word in awe that it really was Bill Young talking to them.

Bill told me that he had the weekend slot opening up. I thought Bill was just being nice to ask me to send an air check to him. I remember the call like it was yesterday. “Dan, this is Bill Young at KILT. You've got the job.”

When I got to KILT, I expected to be treated like the water boy I considered myself to be. Instead, Bill treated me like I had been at KILT forever and so did everyone else. It was a magical experience working around the original Hudson and Harrigan, Rick Shaw, Johnny Michael, Steve Lundy, Ron Foster and Johnny Shannon as well as the great Jim Carola and Robert B. McEntire. Bill picked this talent. Bill created the format. Bill picked the music. Bill selected the jingles. Bill chose Charlie Van Dyke to do our station liners. And of course, Bill himself did the legendary concert promos. In short, the KILT that listeners heard was all because of Bill Young. KILT was voted the Number 1 station in America in 1970 and Bill was selected as one of the country's top five programmers.

It was not an easy thing to do when I met with Bill and told him that I had decided to go to law school. I thanked him for giving me an incredible job that I would always remember.

Bill Young taught me a lot about radio. But he taught me more about life. Regardless of any success you achieve in your career, always treat everyone you meet with respect and humility. Recognize a person's potential even if they don't. If you have confidence in them, they will have confidence in themselves.

I think Robert B. McEntire is right about God's station in heaven. I hope someday I get the chance to apply for a job. It would be my honor to work for Bill Young again. Even as a water boy.

Sharon,
Bill's influence in radio, television, and production is legendary, but his real contributions are not measured by all the trophies, but by his heart for others. Bill was a visionary businessman, but an even better husband, father and friend. Thanks for influence you had on my life.

Bill Young was the voice of the concert industry. He set the standard for concert spots and then continually broke it. His voice gave you goose bumps and his emotion sold more concert tickets than most major rock bands. He was kind, he was humble and he was the best friend you could ever have. Dear Scott, Eric, Sharon and extended Bill Young Family,

From Montreal, Canada - my sister Céline and I are mourning a man that touched our lifes. Working at the Montreal Promoter's office, Bill became a friend.
I once called him asking to work his magic for a tour of a young & new Canadian artist called Celine Dion (he called back to make sure he pronounced her French name right...) and ran all the way to the top with her. Much later in her career, I made sure they met when she embarked on her World Tour. We always stayed in touch and am happy I got to share breakfast with him in 2007.
He was a great man, a great friend and will be sadly missed.

Bill, your light will always shine in my heart. I will never understand why you chose me to take under your wing and teach me everything I didn't know about production. I will forever be grateful for getting the chance to sit in studio A and watch you take a few words and a couple songs and turn them into magic! Your patience, kindness, respect and belief in me made me feel beyond special.
Sharon, Scott, Eric & family, my prayers and thoughts are with all of you. May you find some comfort in knowing he is at Peace.

A loyal friend, a great teacher and encourager was Bill's gift to so many. He changed my life in 1971 hiring me, and warm kindness of Bill, equaled by Sharon as well, has been a treasure. After meeting his Mom and Dad one, I came to understand better his foundation that never wavered, but only grew stronger living a life worth noticing, and one I'll never forget.

He had no greater fan nor better friend than Sharon, and as we all grieve and shed a flood of tears, I know she has the biggest loss of all. Love to you, Scott, and Eric as your lives bring me a world of great memories,

I am so sorry to hear that Bill has died. He was an amazing man who I learned so much from in my early years in radio at KILT.

Bills gift to me was allowing a 17 year old kid the privilege and honor of being invited into a family that was amazingly talented, passionate and reflect his standards for excellence.

I am forever grateful to have known Bill and will always treasure sitting in that production room learning from the master!

The first spot I ever had my voice in, was a Bob Dylan concert spot. It was Bills spot, he certainly didn't need me on it, but he asked me to read just one word. Dylan. Which he then echoed perfectly.

I remember listening to KILT for hours hoping to hear that one word "Dylan". I didn't really understand then what a gift that was. His willingness to allow me to start in this business that I love under his amazing leadership and talent.

I am so glad Bill opened his door to me in the late 70's as a young high school kid from Spring, Texas. He had such a lasting impact on my life and the lives of so many others. He will be missed.

Sharon and family, I pray Bill rest in Peace and the Lord's Peace be with you and all Bill's friends. I listened to Bill growing up in Lufkin but never dreamed I would work for him. Bill heard something in me, and spent a great deal of time and patience getting me to recognize what he knew I could do. I worked across the glass from Bill as his newsman for almost five years. Each day he taught me and gave me skills that still serve today. His ability to put together incredibly talented staffs is legendary, and I often wondered what I was doing on the team. Then one day Bill told me, "yes, you have to be good to work for me and that's why your here." I was so proud to be on his team, I wanted to win for him. I have a great life and great career thanks to Bill Young...and so do a great many others. Sharon, if you need anything, I'm close by. And for my Boss, "Bill, I don't know how many watts God's radio station has, but I can clearly hear you in my mind, right now."
