Dorace Fichtenbaum Obituary

Dorace Maritzky Fichtenbaum passed away peacefully at home on July 11, 2015. Born on November 5, 1929 in Homer, Louisiana to parents Max and Brodie Maritzky, Dorace attended Agnes Scott College and subsequently graduated from The University of Alabama. Upon moving to Dallas, Dorace worked at Neiman Marcus downtown. She met and married Morton Fichtenbaum in 1954 and they were married until his death in 1984. An avid reader who loved history, travel, art and current events, Dorace provided tireless volunteer service and generous support through the years for many organizations including: The National Council of Jewish Women (and the NCJW Thrift Shop), The Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Dallas Ballet, The Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, Temple Emanu-EI, among others. Dorace's world-wide travels- whether with the Dallas Museum of Art or friends- included but were not limited to India, Africa, Cuba, Japan, Israel, Jordan, China and Germany. New York was her favorite U.S. destination and she especially enjoyed going to see private art collections and the theatre on Dallas Museum of Art trips. Closer to home, Dorace loved traveling to Marfa, Texas to see the Donald Judd Studio and the Northern Lights. She also enjoyed fishing and spending time with her loyal dogs.Dorace was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Special thanks are extended to her many caregivers for their dedication and loving care, the most recent of which were Debra Thompson and Brenda Wells. A quintessential southern lady, Dorace will be missed deeply by her many friends. Those wishing to honor her memory can support the following institutions: National Council of Jewish Women, Temple Emanu-EI , Alzheimer's Association , Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Symphony Orchestra or the charity of your choice .

I will always remember her cheerful presence at holiday meals, her stories of international travel and her many projects with the museum and symphony. The organ at the Meyerson was such a source of pride you would almost think she built it herself. Well, she had quite a hand in making it possible, and a great many other projects over the years. She was a delightful and inspiring woman.

Dorace and my mother grew up across the street from each other in Homer. I've known her all my life. She was so kind and gracious. Always cheerful, especially happy playing with her dogs. I will really miss her.

As the Dallas Museum of Art Nancy and Tim Hanley Associate Curator of Contemporary Art for 13 years, I was fortunate to travel with Dorace as well as visit many local art galleries, artist studios, and exhibitions at the DMA and other museums. Although Doris always wore conservative, classic Jackie Kennedy suits, when it came to works of art, she was bold and took risks. She always went after the most challenging and tough art in the room. I will deeply miss her intelligence, grace and generosity. Suzanne
