My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Butch Williams. He was a wonderful young man in our 1963 graduating class at S. P. Waltrip Senior High. He was extremely intelligent and all of us knew he would go far.

We knew Butch for many years and was a good friend of the Whitefield family. Although I have not lived in Houston for many years I did catch up with him periodically when I was in town. He will be missed,

Butch was a special person. His balloon never landed. He was a friend to everyone and a wonderful listener. He and I played drums in both band and orchestra. I loved the guy for how he helped me in so many ways. He was a giver. I think that is why he was such a great teacher.

"Butch" richly deserves all of the many accolades that our fellow Waltrip High School students are giving to him. However, I saw a side of "Butch" that I doubt anyone else experienced. During Christmas vacation of 1962, Mr. Wones, a Waltrip history teacher, "Butch", myself, and three other male students from Waltrip drove to Mexico City in Mr. Wones station wagon. This trip was sold to us as an educational experience by Mr. Wones, whom we paid. After one week in Mexico City, we drove to Puebla, spent several nights there, and then returned to Houston via a different route. Suffice it to say that "Butch" was a totally different person in Mexico than the person we thought that we knew at school. "Butch" in Mexico was free and uninhibited from the constraints of the image that we all had of him. Every one on that trip was surprised by "Butch's" transformation from a serious student to a free wheeling 17 year old male. At our high school 50 year reunion, "Butch" and I talked several times about the memories of that trip and the "educational experiences" we received. When I was a senior at The University of Texas at Austin, "Butch" was already working on his Phd. I shall miss him.

Susan,
I am deeply sorry for the loss of Butch.
He was such a kind and wonderful man.
You have always held a special place in my heart and memories. I still have the letter you sent me after Mark and I left Texas to move to California.
You are in our thoughts!

I can still see Ed (known to his fellow high school students as "Butch") walking between classrooms at Waltrip High School with his briefcase... not exactly a wild teenager. He took his studies seriously... and particularly his politics (which he gladly shared... but respectful of others' beliefs). His outstanding (and YOUTHFUL) achievements surprised no one, as we all knew that Butch would "go far." You will be missed, Butch!
