Emmett Philpott Obituary

Emmett Wayne Philpott
1928-2017
Emmett "Wayne" Philpott left for the most wonderful journey of his life, Monday, July 17, 2017. He has traveled the world many times, but this time there will be no comparison and no turning back. He is in Heaven exploring its wonder and beauty. He'll be waiting to guide our grand tour when we meet again.
Wayne aka Mr. Magic loved to entertain. His passion was making people laugh. He never met a stranger. He directed skits involving unfortunate (pre-warned) audience members, he performed comedic routines that would leave you holding your belly to relieve your laughter pains, and for years was Master of Ceremonies for Baylor University's Homecoming Ceremonies. But most of all he loved performing Magic Tricks and Card Tricks for kids. He would leave them wide eyed and in awe of what they witnessed.
For those of you who knew him, I bet you heard a funny explanation of how he lost his finger. He told so many stories, I'm not sure even his kids know what really happened.
For the last several years, Wayne has lived in a Senior Living Community. He struggled with Dementia, but that didn't squash his sense of humor. The other residences and staff looked forward to meal time when Wayne would dish out witty one liners that would surprise and amuse those around him. He was still a big kidder up until the very end.
Wayne left us peacefully with loved ones by his side.
He leaves behind his children, Paula Blye Philpott Durrett, her husband Craig Durrett, of Houston, Laran Ray Philpott, his wife Karen Ruth Jones Philpott from Nashville, TN, Genna Philpott of Rowlett, TX, his granddaughter Lauren Dell Horner Hoffman, her husband Dustin Joseph Hoffman, and his great granddaughter Della Ruth Hoffman also from Nashville, TN. He also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins scattered across the country.
Daddy, enjoy your friends & family reunions in Heaven, and we will see you again. You made an imprint on the hearts of those who loved you. You will not be forgotten.
Wayne Philpott's final resting place will be at the Houston National Cemetery on Veterans Memorial Dr. There will be a Celebration of Life Service at South Main Baptist Church of Houston (Chapel) on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 1:00 PM.

Let me tell you about the Wayne I knew.
As we walk through life, we meet special people who touch our hearts and impact our life. Wayne was such a person. He was a proud graduate of Baylor University. While serving as minister of music in San Antonio, Wayne would take the 5:00 am train to San Antonio. One particularly cold morning he put his suit on over his pajamas. After leading the song service, he sat down and noticed the front row of older women pointing and laughing. He looked down and saw the bottoms of his pajamas hanging out. Thus came the name "Pajama Phil". He continued to lead song service even though he could not read or sing. He then worked for Word Record Company in the book division. He found his life long passion of traveling and formed Wayne's World Travel for 35 years. He made the Bible come to life to his clients as he loved to travel to Israel and share stories of the Gospel and history of the regions where they traveled. While living in Lakeside, he and Jenny fell in love with two little girls, Cynthia and Azul. He delighted in spending Saturdays with them and he became their grandfather and they his grandchildren.
On Sundays you would find Wayne at Lake Chapala Baptist Church where he was sometimes the Minister of Music. He did Christmas Pageants and was song leader for an all community based sing-a-long. For two years he brought the Houston Children's Chorus for one week of concerts, dancing and sharing with local children. Mixing music, dancing, God's work and children were all under the magical spell of love and thankfulness Wayne offered to everyone who was honored to meet him.

So sorry to hear of Wayne's passing. Heartfelt sympathies go out to all his family. He was my friend, golfing buddy, and one time business partner for almost 45 years. Everyone who came in contact with him went away smiling. His presence will be sorely missed on this earth but he will be more than welcome to his new home in Heaven.

Uncle Wayne was a treasure to many. I have many fond memories of him. We shared a love of Baylor and a discomfort with Fundamentalists. May he rest in peace.
