Eric Hilton Obituary

Eric Hilton
1933-2016
Las Vegas, NV:
Eric Michael Hilton, Vice chairman emeritus of Hilton Hotels Corporation, and youngest son of Conrad Hilton has passed away peacefully at the age of 83 at his home in Las Vegas on December 10th. 2016 with his devoted wife of 32 years, Bibi Hilton, by his side.
"I'm just an ordinary man with a rich man's name". Those are words Mr. Hilton often used to describe himself. He was born on July 1st 1933 in Dallas, Texas to Conrad Hilton and his wife Mary Adelaide Barron.
He is survived by his wife, his older brother Barron Hilton, four children, two stepchildren, eleven grandchildren as well as his two beloved dogs.
Eric Michael Hilton, youngest son of Conrad Hilton, founder of Hilton Hotels Corporation, began his career in 1949 and worked his way up in the company retiring in 1997 as vice chairman emeritus after having held various key positions. Prior to his election to vice chairman in 1993, Mr. Hilton served as executive vice president and as a director of Hilton Hotels Corporation, as well as president of Conrad International Hotels.
The cities of Hong Kong, Houston and Las Vegas have all been home to Mr. Hilton and his wife before they settled permanently in Las Vegas in 2013.
Eric Hilton carried forth the philanthropic legacy of his father by passionately serving as a director for the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation until the time of his passing. Mr. Hilton previously served on the seven-member international jury that selects the recipient of the annual $1.5 million Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize and as chairman of the board of the BEST Foundation for a Drug-Free Tomorrow. He also served as a director of the Little League Foundation of America for almost 45 years.
In 2007, with the support of his wife Bibi, Mr. Hilton founded Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas which quickly has become a nationwide model for hunger relief, being the youngest and fastest growing food bank in the country.
Mr. Hilton is also the founder of Nevada Medical Center, a non-profit organization focusing on enhancing the health status of people residing in and visiting Nevada by modeling the success of the Houston Medical Center.
He leaves behind a legacy of education in the hospitality industry through the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston, which was founded after a recommendation made by Mr. Hilton to his father in 1969.
Mr. Hilton has been honored with numerous awards, including the Alumni President's Award and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Houston, as well as the American Vocational Association Award of Merit.
"I can think of no greater God-given responsibility we have than that of extending a helping hand to our fellow man."- Conrad Hilton
Mr. Hilton lived those words of his father and carried forth his legacy of leaving this world a better place for the ones in need.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Hilton encourage donations to be made to Three Square Food Bank (www.threesquare.org) in her husband's honor. A reception and a celebration of his life will be held at Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas at a later date.

I will never forget any of the Hilton family that I was blessed to know when I worked as a singer in `69 - `70. I started a job singing as the duo, Kay & Diane. We opened shows in the Continental Room for so many well known entertainers.
We worked in the International Club Lounge from 5pm-8pm and then on to open the big shows at 9pm in the Continental Room. I had graduated from the UofH and was offered the job at the Hilton when we were performing at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston. Let´s say it was an offer I could not refuse. One would think the Hiltons wouldn´t have time to talk to any of their performers, but I learned very soon, the opposite was true. The family and sometimes just Eric would land on the helicopter pad on the grounds just outside the front entry to the grand hotel. Many times Eric would come into the lounge just to visit with everybody. I would see him shaking hands with the men who usually sat at the gorgeous bar. One night Eric called me over and introduced me to Alan King. I was so at ease in his presence as was everybody who met Eric Hilton. He just had a way about him that made everyone feel at home when at the Shamrock.
He would always applaud when we sang our little songs and I knew he hadn´t even had time to listen, but he made time to let us know he was pleased. I could go on and on about this incredibly generous and kind man. We were able to get in touch later in life and we talked on the phone now and then. He was living in Vegas and still had that great sense of humor and his passion to help others.
There won´t be another like him and I am so honored to know he was my boss as well as my friend whom I shall never forget.
Rest in the perfect peace of God dear Eric. You will never be forgotten!

Dear Bibi & Mr. Hilton's children:

I met Mr. Hilton while sitting next to him in the front row of a Southwest flight from Austin to Las Vegas in December 2012 before Christmas. He asked, "Could you hold my hand? My wife Bibi always holds my hand during take off. " He said he was visiting his son in Austin and his wife Bibi was driving home to Las Vegas from Houston with a friend visiting from Europe. We talked the entire flight. He asked what ethnicity I was and I said my father was from Taiwan. He said he'd been to Taiwan to start the Hilton hotels and that's when I figured out he was a Hilton! I told him that I had stayed at the Hilton hotel in Washington DC and that it needed some updating. He agreed. He said they had sold the hotels to Blackstone but his daughter still worked for the hotels. He shared they were of Scandinavian descent (Norwegian Catholic I vaguely recall) and how his father started his business in Texas. He mentioned his step mother Zsa Zsa Gabor. I asked starstruck, "Ooh! What was she like?". He said, "She's a nice lady." He said his ex wife served him divorce papers while he was on the golf course. He told me how he helped start the hospitality education at a university in Houston and had a building named after him. He was now in full time philanthropy on the board of the Hilton trust fund helping the homeless in Las Vegas. He asked me, "You're a Christian. What are your thoughts on my grand niece as a role model?" He welcomed me to visit and stay at his home in Las Vegas anytime, but I never took him up on the offer. He asked for my contact information and I gave him my address. He said he would mail me a copy of a book he was writing on philanthropy and helping the homeless in Las Vegas, but I never received his book. He held my hand during the descent of the flight. He was a very kind man who loved his wife, children and people. I will never forget him or our delightful conversation. I shall see you again in heaven, Mr. Hilton.

I'm so sorry for your loss. May the Lord comfort your family.

What a dear man, Eric Hilton! I was blessed to begin my music career at the Shamrock Hilton in Houston, Texas.
Eric was so kind as were all the Hiltons to me. I sent him a note somewhere in the early part of 2002 and we communicated often after that by phone. He was never boastful of his name, instead he was giving to all who were in need! Thank you to Beverly Hilton Neapolitan for helping us to reconnect after so many years. God bless all of the Hilton family and thank you Eric Hilton for being my friend.

Just found out that our friend Eric has passed away. Our Christmas card was returned and we were wondering ... going to stop by the house this weekend when we were in town. Such a nice, generous hearted man. We so much enjoyed our visits and meals together. May he rest in peace, and may Bibi, bless her, carry on.

My dear BiBi and family,
This news breaks our heart. BiBi, as you know, flirting was one of Eric's "superior skill sets", and I will forever treasure all of those fun and frivolous moments. Jay treasured his morning chats in the card room with Eric. They would just talk and Eric would share stories about his life. A dear man has left us who will never be replaced. We have lost the last of the true romantics. God, look after him kindly, if you please, he was a friend of ours.

Mr. Hilton forever changed the way this community supports and will continue to support and provide food for its less fortunate neighbors. His vision will become a reality in that nobody should go hungry. He was the consummate professional, always challenging the status quo and ensuring Three Square was positioned for success. This community owes Eric and the Hilton Foundation a tremendous debt of gratitude for making the decisions that brought Three Square to life.

Having met Eric at the LVH in 1998 I was blessed to have known him. Whether it was on the golf course or sitting & solving all of the problems that we all faced in Mr. Stoner's office at the LVH, Eric was always a pleasure to be around. His abundant enthusiasm & frank honest opinion will always be instilled within me & I am grateful for Eric guiding me in those traits! May Bebe & family keep all of the precious memories of Eric close to your hearts & the tears of sadness will turn to smiles with time.
