Geraldine "Gerry" Eversole
1923-2022
Geraldine "Gerry" Eversole, age 98, born, raised, and lived in Houston, Texas all her life, passed away peacefully in the morning on Friday, January 7,2022. She was born on July 7,1923 to Gladys Aiken and Elliott Anderson. Gerry's early life was marked with tragedy losing both her parents by the age of 14. She and her only brother, Milton lived with their maternal grandparents, Florence and Augustus Aiken.
Gerry graduated from Lamar High School, Houston in 1940 and was proud that she was in the first graduating class to attend all 3 years in the "new" school. Gerry attended the University of Houston until she met a handsome pilot in the US Army Air Corp who was stationed at Ellington Air Force Base for training in 1941. Henry Wray Eversole came from St. Louis, Missouri, and always said that it took only one look for him to know he was going to marry Gerry. However, she wanted nothing to do with that "Yankee", but it didn't take long to convince her otherwise as they married on September 20, 1942, in El Paso, Texas on their way to S. Dakota for his B-17 training. As frightening as the war years were, their love grew deeper and stronger as evidenced by the letters they wrote each other after Henry went overseas. Their 59-year marriage ended when Henry died on January 21, 2002, just shy of his 82nd birthday. They had 2 children: Henry W. Eversole, Jr, who passed away in March 2020 and Nancy Eversole Moncrief.
In 1952, Gerry and Henry became founding members of St. Martins Episcopal Church. At that time, church services were held in the living room of the home of their friends and new rector, Mary Louise and Tom Bagby. Gerry was so proud to see their early vision become the beautiful church it is today. In those early days, she was organizing church bazaars, covered dish suppers, fairs and forging lifelong friendships. She sang in the original Church choir and very often was a soloist. In later years, she continued her work with the Saintly Stitchers, the Blanket Ladies and as a Docent, which allowed her to welcome visitors to the church she loved so much.
Gerry and Henry loved traveling with their family and friends and would always have a trip in the works. Between all the places they were stationed during WWII, and all the road trips they took for vacations and business, Henry said they had traveled to all 48 contiguous states.
Gerry was given a beautiful voice and with little professional training, auditioned for The Houston Grand Opera Chorus and became one of the 90 voices that helped elevate the opera productions in the 60's. Because she was small, she often was the first to step on stage and more often, than not she received the applause meant for the Prima Donna, much to the chagrin of the female lead.
She loved her friends dearly and was a member of several luncheon clubs, bridge clubs, dance clubs and civic groups. Her family meant the world to her, and she wanted to be right in the middle of everything. She loved going to their activites, birthdays and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Serving as Pallbearers are Price Moncrief, Logan Moncrief, Matt Moncrief, Andrew Moncrief, Christian Bishop, Joel Schrock, Jack Schrock, Chris Dunbar, and Spencer Dunbar. Serving as Honorary Pallbearers to their Great-Grandmother are Trey Moncrief, Henry Moncrief, and Lucas Moncrief.
Gerry is survived by her devoted daughter, Nancy, but lost her beloved son-in-law, Lee P, Moncrief in July 2008. She also leaves her adored daughter-in-law and dear friend, Lona Bethea Eversole. She was so proud of her 6 grandchildren and their spouses: Katherine E. Schrock (Joel), Nancy E. Dunbar (Chris), L. Price Moncrief, Jr (Brooke), Logan A. Moncrief (Melissa), Matthew H.H. Moncrief (Lauren) and Andrew S. Moncrief (Meredith). She adored her 14 great grandchildren: Kiersten Jimenez (Jordi), Jack Schrock, Madison and Spencer Dunbar, and Lily, Trey, Caroline, Anderson, Charlotte, Henry, Lucas, Clara, Annabelle, and Adele Moncrief. She is also survived by her cousins; Earl Moursund and Ken Moursund (Claudia), her 6 nieces and 2 nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Gerry's angel on earth, Janice Campbell for her love, devotion and care and acknowledge Blue Star Hospice as well as Gerry's doctor Dr. A. Narine.
