Ilona Walbruck Obituary

Ilona Maria
Walbruck (Sugar Land) passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013. She was born in Thorn, Germany on June 2, 1942, to the late Dr. Harry (Hapa) A. Walbruck & Rita (Tama) M. Walbruck. Growing up in Germany during WWII & post-war taught her many valuable lessons. She along with her parents immigrated to America in 1953 and settled in Burlington, Wisconsin; later moving to Milwaukee. She married Norman Paul and received her Bachelors from The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1963 and then her Masters in 1970. She then moved with her family from Wisconsin to Houston, TX in 1973.
Ms. Walbruck was a passionate teacher of high school German & English for many years in Houston, Texas. She spent most of her career at Jersey Village High School in Cy-Fair I.S.D. where she spent countless hours with her students. She sponsored numerous trips to Germany with her students, as well as regular visits to local cultural events to enhance their foreign language experience. She treasured these memories with her students and spoke of it often. Her love of teaching continued after her retirement, as she spent many years substitute teaching at Spring Woods & Memorial High Schools in Spring Branch I.S.D. She loved reading, playing games and especially traveling, visiting all 50 states as well as many foreign countries in her golden years.
She is survived by her mother, Rita M. Walbruck (96) of Racine, WI, her sons, Michael (Melissa) Paul of Sugar Land, TX and Mark (Kim) Paul of Montgomery, TX; grandchildren Alexandra and Nicholas Paul. She is further survived by family in Germany as well. Omi, as her grandchildren called her, will be remembered fondly and missed by us all as a daughter, mother, and grandmother. She is now in her "BIG HUGE" classroom in Heaven.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, Nov.16, 2013 at Grace Presbyterian Church, 10219 Ella Lee Ln. Houston, TX 77042.

Frau W. was an amazing teacher and friend for me during a very important time in my life. I have often tried to find out what happened to her and maintain contact after she taught me at JVJS. I wish her family all the best. She was a selfless teacher and a true mentor. 1991-

Ilona;

Looking at photos of you and reading about your life, Esteban & I are amazed by your life's story. It is a beautiful account of your personal and family values, & tells of your travels abroad and domestic.

Your social strength and virtuous gift that shines brightest at us is your passion to take care of others. Drawing from your life's example, Esteban & I will do a better job of reaching out to take care of others as you always did for your family, & friends.

God bless the Walbruck and Paul Family.

Mike and Mark, so sorry to hear about your mom. It's so hard to lose our parents as they've been with us all our life. Many times we disagree with them and think they're a little "crazy" but they are our mom and dad and we love them. Take care, we're thinking about you and hoping to see you sometime.

I've known Ilo from 7th grade when her family came to America. We didn't see much of each other in later years but I know she will be missed.
May you be happy Ilo.
God bless your family!
Mary
She is at peace!
