Joseph Leslie Obituary

Joseph R. "Joe" Leslie
1925-2015
Joseph R. "Joe" Leslie, 89, passed away quietly on Monday, April 27, 2015. Born in Shreveport, LA on June 11, 1925, Joe lived there until 2004 when he and Doris moved to Houston. Joe was a beloved character who touched all he met. After graduating from Fair Park High School, he served in the U.S Army Air Corps during World War II in the European Theatre of Operations. Upon returning to Shreveport after the war, he married Doris Passantino on January 15, 1946 and they remained married until his death.
Joe worked as an electrician, as Superintendent of the Cross Lake Patrol, and in sales. He was active in Civil Defense, where he worked with an Eagle Scout troop, and in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a long time member of the Lowe McFarland Post #14 of the American Legion and the Forty & Eight, where he served in various offices including Post Commander, District Commander, Department of Louisiana Vice Commander and Chef De Gare, and was the recipient of numerous awards. He remained active in the Legion after moving to Houston, where he was also a member of the Downtown Lions Club. He also was a faithful volunteer at the VA Hospital in both Shreveport and Houston, and he and Doris were long-time volunteers at Senior Friends in Shreveport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Irish and Jodie Moore Leslie. He is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Doris; by his daughter Diann and husband Mike Lewter; his grandson Mike Lewter, Jr. and wife Karen; great-grandchildren Kaitlin and Mikey Lewter; and a brother John D. "Jimmy" Leslie and wife Carolyn; a sister-in-law Catherine Nelson; and nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Holly Hall who provided loving and compassionate care for Joe during the last year of his life.
A graveside service will be held at eleven o'clock in the morning on Monday, May 4, at Forest Park Cemetery in Shreveport, Louisiana (3700 St. Vincent Ave., Shreveport, LA, 71103).
A memorial service will be held in Houston at a later date.
For those who desire, memorials can be made to Camp For All, 10500 NW Freeway, Ste 220, Houston, TX 77092.

Had the pleasure of working under Mr. Leslie at Cross Lake Patrol while in college during the summer and breaks. Very kind man and a "real character".

Dear Doris and Diann,

We loved getting to know Joe at Holly Hall. He was quite a character,to say the least. Our Mom, Marie Caldwell, really appreciated his forwarding of the daily news paper each day. I am sorry for your loss. He was an awesome guy!! He made me laugh each time I talked with him. And I know the staff at Holly Hall will miss him as well. Marie's caregivers, Karen and Tiffiannee were among his many fans. Take care...
